No it cant be ... great depression happened at a time when world economy was not connected at all and banking systems were not connected ... individuals were not connected with banks ...

Now consider if banking systems and insurance companies failled then all your assets in banks stock markets insurance mutual funds will become zero in a couple of days and that will happen to all companies and individuals ... currencies will loose its value

Thats the question China needs to answer, every time they buy or hold onto the bonds it indicates they are not confident about their own economy. If China was so confident they would invest the surplus back into their own country.

My another view of thinking is that China looks to inherit the western system instead of destroying it, they want to replace it with their own power. Thats the reason why they are being patient. But in the end it might be too late and the system itself get sabotaged by western block.

Your second point is the the most reasonable assumption ... second explanation could be that its a chinese economic weapon or hedge against US bullying ...

If US ever tried to bully China or to pressurize china economically by sanctions china can move to encashing US bonds which US cant pay ... so this is a hedge against US sanctions

You are very much right, western countries will use which will give them a edge over others, that's the game. As the trade and military edge wanes it will shift towards technology. Then it will be back to square one over again for the rest of the world. Western powers started with trade then slavery -> colonialism->neo-colonialism-> technology . Non-western countries like India/China should become trendsetters instead of seeking parity in the system which will never happen as the very structure of the system is designed to keep them shackled.
