Dalai Lama: Tibet needs China
Nov 14, 2005

The Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, said on Monday that his country should remain within China for the sake of its economic development.

But the 70-year-old leader said the Tibetan people themselves would have to determine their future if China continued to deny them real autonomy.

"If Chinese government provides us meaningful autonomy, self law, then it is in our own interest to remain within the People's Republic of China," said the Dalai Lama, who has lived in India since he fled from Chinese troops in 1959.

As far as economic development was concerned, Tibet would get immense benefit if it remained part of China, he told a 16,000 strong gathering in Washington, where he is on 10-day visit that includes talks with US President George W Bush.

"Tibet is economically backward, although spiritually highly advanced. But spiritual (strength) alone cannot fill our stomach. So we need economic development," he said.

Tibet to benefit economically within China: Dalai Lama

Washington, Nov 14 (AFP) The Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, has said that the Himalayan kingdom should remain within China for the sake of the territory's economic development.

But the 70-year-old leader yesterday said the Tibetan people themselves would have to determine their future if China continued to deny them "meaningful" autonomy.

"If Chinese government provides us meaningful autonomy, self law, then it is in our own interest to remain within the People's Republic of China," said the Dalai Lama, who has lived in India since he fled Chinese troops in 1959, basing his government-in-exile in Dharamsala.

"As far as economic development is concerned, we'll get immense benefit" if Tibet remained as part of China, he told a 16,000 strong gathering in Washington, where he is on 10-day visit that included talks with US President George W Bush.

"Tibet is economically backward although spiritually highly advanced. But spiritual (strength) alone cannot fill our stomach. So we need economic development," the Dalai Lama said.

Honestly the Lama must understand that in the 21st century theocracy won't work, if the dalai lama wants to meet his followers the only way is through china.

.
Very true.

Firstly, these types of activists tend to kill themselves rather than killing others. Which is an excellent quality to have.

Secondly, the ones who burn themselves to death, are the most radical in terms of politics. So they are essentially taking themselves out of the picture, and saving us a lot of political trouble in the future.

No man, the people who self immolate themselves are victims, I doubt they came up with the idea without consulting to their head Lama first, someone too cowardly to do it himself so he gets some poor sap to do it.

LOL.

It's funny how the Indians here love to post threads about our internal issues, yet they wish that their separatists would only kill themselves and not others.

Terrorist groups in India like LeT and the Maoists, slaughter hundreds of people at a time, not just civilians but soldiers too. And they are growing stronger every day.

In this situation in Tibet, the biggest political troublemakers are essentially taking themselves out. And their Dalai Lama is publicly supporting Tibet as a part of China.

^^^^^ I'm still rolling around to ,Sad the Dalai Lama made these people commit suicide for a cause that is bound to fail.

Again an off-topic troll! Where does terrorists targeting india come in! A piece of advice - If you find yourself criticizing others a lot, stop. It harms you more than them.

Keep taking comfort in the fact that there are terrorist organizations targetting India, I hope that vanishes the Tibet problem altogether. :P

''The Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, said on Monday that his country should remain within China for the sake of its economic development.''

I'm sure he would have loved his palace full of slaves and his theocracy :D

Tibetan serfdom, life under the Dalai lama rule,Dalai lama himself was the biggest owner of serfs in Tibet.serfs were not considered to be humans whereas enjoyed no human freedom and liberty, they were just like properties belonging to their masters and lives totally confined to serving their masters.serfs lives were hellish under Dalai lama serfdom, serfs can easily lose their arms,legs,noses,eyes...for minor mistake they may make ,and those noblemen masters pushed cruelty to the new limit, they enjoy using human skin made objects.

They can keep burning themselves and china wouldn't even care about, they should find other ways to protest rather then setting themselves on fire.

.
at least now young Titetans dont have to be destined as a monk or a nun, they can have a choice just like everywhere else young people do in the world, they can choose to be a teacher,a scientist,a singer ,a dancer.they enjoy going to bars ,movies and having parties like young people like to do every where in this world, well ,you may call it cultural genocide or killing Tibetan traditional cultures...whatever you like to say,but no culture stays the same and never moves forward.
