The Fight against PKK Terrorism

I hope at least TSK uses this "süreç" well, they seriously need to reform their strategy and quickly adapt to T-129. if this period ends I don't want to see the same news that has been circulating for decades.

. .

I'll try to explain.

After the 1990 Gulf war it was the no-fly zone of the north established by NATO including Turkey that made it impossible for Iraq to keep the Northern mountains free of the PKK as they had no control over it anymore. No fly-zone did not only mean the Iraqi air force would not be allowed to fly over the north or south, ground forces weren't either, they were targeted often. Also almost each year there were cruise missile attacks on ground forces HQ's and infrastructure that made it impossible for the army to operate in the North to remove the PKK.

Therefor Saddam passed a law allowing Turkey to operate in N. Iraq to fight the PKK. Today with the new government, Maliki-Erdogan are playing political games against each other, since Erdogan is having deals with the KRG the central gov isn't happy with and he supports the Muslim Brotherhood in many states, Iraq's Muslim brotherhood party is called 'The Islamic party' led by Tareq al Hashimi whom Erdogan took in to protect. Maliki's statements of the link you posted are not because he is pro PKK or because he is defending the PKK, it's part of the political games between those 2. We all know Erdogan has his personal religiously influenced agenda separate from Turkish national interests that made him make some retarded statements from time to time like this.

Other words from Maliki pushing for co-operation& clearly against the PKK.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki confronted the activities of the PKK, following the May 15 foundation laying ceremony of a Turkish-constructed hospital in Karbala, by claiming that "We have a reliable cooperation with Turkey to bring an end to this terrorist organisation and other organisations that want to damage other neighbouring countries, who are our friends. When it comes to Turkey's possible intervention in northern Iraq, the issue is more massive and complicated than it is assumed to be. There is the need for a grand cooperation", and "I know the mountains where the PKK take shelter; they are precipitous mountains. We will find ways to stop the activities of this terror organisation and to finish this organisation through cooperation and understanding between us and Turkey."

Today it's not Iraq but the KRG that controls the Qandil mountains where PKK resides , they never clashed with them since 1991 or 2003 ? ,they're the ones that should be dealing with them currently though why would they when they both have the same final goal.

Iraqis constantly strains relations despite of our good will. :disagree:
It's the other way around with Erdogan that keeps rejecting good relations, if Iraq was against Turkey they wouldn't trade that much with them contributing to the Turkish economy, the KRG trade part is way smaller then with the rest of the state.

Two Turkish security forces were wounded in a clash with members of the PKK terrorist organization in eastern Tunceli province.
World Bulletin / News Desk

Two Turkish soldiers were wounded on Friday in a clash with members of the PKK terrorist organization in the Sutluce district of eastern Tunceli province in the eastern Anatolian region of Turkey, local officials said.

The clash broke out after terrorists attacked the soldiers who were searching for mines near the Sutluce gendarmerie station, according to a written statement issued by Tunceli Governor’s Office.

The soldiers have been taken to hospital and an investigation is underway, the statement added.

Additionally, nine construction workers were allegedly kidnapped by the outlawed PKK armed group while working on a road-building project at a military base in Turkey’s southeastern province Sirnak late Wednesday.

Turkey's 'solution process' began early last year with a ceasefire between the Turkish government and outlawed PKK terrorist organization. The government pledged democratic reforms to empower minorities, particularly the Kurdish minority, which is by far the largest, forming 18 percent of the population.

SE Turkey families call for return of minors kidnapped by PKK

College students Halime Gunduz, Firat Aydin and Habip Temel have not been seen since April.
World Bulletin / News Desk

Families of minors who have been kidnapped by PKK rebels in south-eastern Turkey gathered in the city of Diyarbakir on Monday to protest for the return of their children.

Calling for the help of the Turkish authorities to find their loved ones, the families pleaded for the return of college students Halime Gunduz, Firat Aydin and Habip Temel.

Halime Gunduz and Firat Aydin have not been seen since April 23 after they went on a picnic organized by PKK sympathizers. Habip Temel has been missing since April 4 after attending a ceremony marking jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan's birthday.

The families, who have requested a meeting with the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) lawmaker to seek help in securing the release of the youths but are yet to receive a reply, on Tuesday started a sit-in protest at the city's Yasam Park.

Turkish NGO Mazlum-der also called for the release of the minors, citing a Geneva agreement signed on October 5, 2013 to protect children from participating in armed conflicts or joining armed groups.

PKK commander has 'no regrets' on peace process

karayilan.jpg

Murat Karayilan reaffirmed his support for the solution process for the Kurds of Turkey.
World Bulletin / News Desk

The commander of the armed wing of the Kurdish separatist PKK in Turkey's south-east, Murat Karayilan, has said that he has no regrets over the peace process that was commenced between the Turkish government and PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan last year.

In an article published in the PKK's monthly publication Serxwebun magazine, Karayilan pledged his dedication to the peace process, which consists of three stages. The first stage, which consists of a ceasefire and retreat of PKK fighters from Turkish soil, has already been fulfilled. Now Turkey is in the process of fulfilling its legal obligations as part of a second stage, while the third and final stage consists of the normalization of relations.

Regarding this, Karayilan wrote: "The finak stafe is to release all prisoners and forgive each other. The fulfilling of these three stages means a solution to the Kurdish problem. A solution to the Kurdish problem is a great step towards solving all the problems that are leading to a deadlock in the Middle-East."

"We have no regrets over the year since this process was initiated," he said, adding "of course there will be gains for us as a people and a movement."

"Above all else, the whole world has seen that we really want a solution achieved through politics and dialogue. We are not pro-war, we are pro-peace. However, we are bound by our honor and dignity. If it is for our honor, dignity and freedom we will fight," he added.

A ceasefire was declared in a letter sent from the jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan at the Newroz celebrations last year, which was read out to a jubilant crowd of Kurds in the south-eastern Turkish city of Diyarbakir.

Talks between Turkish officials and the PKK leader continue to take place at his high-security prison on Imrali island.

2 wounded in mine explosion in eastern Turkey
ŞIRNAK - Doğan News Agency

The drivers of two trucks carrying materials to a military post construction were wounded when a mine exploded on May 25 in the eastern province of Şırnak.

The mine, allegedly planted by members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), was detonated remotely while the trucks and two armored vehicles were proceeding to the construction area, five kilometers from the center of Beytüşşebap district, reports said.

The drivers were taken to Beytüşşebap State hospital. No damage to the military personnel or vehicles was reported.

An operation has been launched in the region to apprehend those responsible.

The armored vehicles were reportedly accompanying the trucks because other drivers carrying sand to the construction site had previously been threatened.

Clashes between PKK members and security forces end after two days in southeastern Turkey
DİYARBAKIR

The clashes that had erupted between members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and security forces in southeastern province of Diyarbakır have ended after a two day skirmish.

The attack began when the PKK blocked a main road in the region.

However, illegal demonstrations continued for two days after the main road blocked by PKK members was opened on May 26, following interventions by security forces.

The group threw Molotov cocktails, noise bombs filled with nails and fireworks during the clashes, while security forces used water cannons to disperse them.

Seven security officers have been slightly wounded, the Diyarbakır Governor office said, as reported by Anadolu Agency.

An operation has been ongoing to capture the groups and ensure the safety of citizens travelling in the region, the statement added.

PKK members first gathered on May 25 to protest an irrigation dam project planned to be built in the region, the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) said in an official statement released May 26.

Groups repeatedly gathered at the scene and blocked the road by parking vehicles on the road, despite interventions, and were finally dispersed on late May 26, the TSK said.

PKK members also opened harassing fire, to which the TSK immediately returned fire in Lice district.

Tension high in region

Tension in the region has escalated in recent days, despite the ongoing peace process.

A convoy of 10 vehicles, including eight trucks and two armored military cars, was attacked by members of the PKK on May 25 in the eastern province of Şırnak. Militants detonated improvised explosives remotely as the convoy was going to a post construction area, and another explosive device was defused by the authorities at the scene. No casualties were reported.

Meanwhile, in the eastern province of Bingöl on May 22, militants set alight two excavators and a cylinder vehicle after detaining guards.

On May 21, militants halted a truck carrying wood and set it alight in Mardin, while also threatening citizens not to cut firewood in the area and seizing people’s cell phones.

Other incidents involving PKK members were reported by the military in the eastern provinces of Hakkari and Ağrı.

The government-led initiative to address the long-running Kurdish issue by ending the three-decade-old conflict between security forces and the PKK has ground to a halt in recent months. Öcalan began talks with Turkish officials last year to stop the conflict, which has left more than 40,000 people dead over the past three decades. In March 2013, he ordered his fighters to observe a cease-fire, which has tentatively held since then.
