Taste testing Thar desert's new solar pumped water

Taste testing Thar desert's new solar pumped water - BBC News

A new multimillion dollar project that uses solar power to treat underground saline water is offering a ray of hope in south east Pakistan.

Water scheme
This region has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the country. On most measures of development, Thar is at the bottom of Pakistan's 120 districts.

Doctors and nurses are hard to find. Qualified medical staff from the region often leave to earn much more money in big cities like Karachi.

In Thar, there are many villages without schools and many schools without teachers.

The new water system promises much, but supplies remain sporadic

Sindh government defends its performance by pointing to its massive investment in a new scheme to bring clean drinking water to the region.

The $33m project involves installing 750 water purification projects in villages across the desert region. Of these, as of this month, about 280 have already been installed, says PakOasis, the company running the project.

The scheme is being billed as a ray of hope for Thar. It uses imported Danish technology to pump underground water. Impurities from the water are then removed using American membrane technology. The filtration process is called Reverse Osmosis (RO).

Each RO plant runs on zero-electricity cost. It is powered by solar panels imported from China.

The biggest of these water plants stands on a hill near Mithi. It has the capacity of purifying 2 million gallons of water daily. At its full capacity, it is expected to benefit 300,000 people.

good initiative by Pakistan to mitigate the suffering of these people but why build such expensive plants??

These poor communities will not be able to afford the cost. So, what happens when the bores dry out - do you shift the plant???

When you have brainless govt this is how they try to win credibility and showcase performance by showing off how much money they spend over how much worth they get! ....

At least for the time being it has 0 running cost as a solar plant and that region is dying need of water....Not sure what the long term plan is

It is lot cheaper to send water tanks to these regions as temporary fix and find some long term solutions like rain harvesting and other measures.

That is true but water tanks may not be an option esp when oil is expensive and scarce and 2ndly, when the roads to the region arent properly built and water tanks themselves might be transporting rust filled water...

Rain harvesting is a long forgotten art which should def be revived but in a desert it is tough with high evaporation rates and less rainfall...

NGOs also help KPK with education and health.

You think KP pays out of its pocket for health and education programs? Hint: Adopt a school.

NGOs are also helping Sindh and Punjab...Your point being?

I actually dont give a damn about provinces as much as people here on PDF do...It makes me sick! Every province is a part of Pakistan and I dont differentiate...I do differentiate between people ACTIVELY pocketing money - Simple words HARAM KHANAY WALAY!

My post was QUESTIONING why the govt was taking credit for something fully run on NGO?

Did Sindh govt put in anything? From plan, resources....anything?

I dont talk about KPK ..the same way I dont talk about Baluchistan...

However, KPK (in its history) has never been anywhere close (in ANY field) to Punjab and Sindh so comparing them is for the politicians to win brownie points!

Have more money 8-) implement this

No money :( Try this

.
Had the govt an active brain they would have implemented the canal solar power instead of a simple solar pump....It seems they quickly put something together without (as usual) thinking of anything long term....They are only interested in showing they used the money allocated to them...HOW they used it seems irrelevant! WAS it used for something sustainable also seems irrelevant

KPK likes to take credit for many things that NGO do.

But of course, I'm arguing with a blind supporter.

Nawaz says: Pakistan starts with P. Akhleios says: NAWAZ LIAR!

Show me 1 post of mine even remotely close to this crap you came up with!

Most likely it IS being built by NGO....some of which are in partnership with the govt and not lone NGOs....While Punjab has been built by NGO forever....even now when it is in a better shape its education part is almost completely under NGO while in KPK even the NGO sites (at least the ones I have been doing) Say what the govt does and how they supplement the missing areas.....

While those in Punjab the NGO have been saying govt isnt doing much with the 2% cry from UNESCO which is actually based on the 2010 or 2012 report...yup no new report...I have been scanning both world bank and UNESCO sites for reports and both have old reports....So I am not sure what is going on there...All I can do is quote what the NGO who I have been researching are saying about Punjab!

Punjab never been in a mess like KPK yet politically blind people want are asking KPK to outshine Punjab something Punjab hasnt been able to do itself?

Flood damage is still as severe as it was 8yrs back...Nothing new done to mitigate flood damage....
Education is still in an equal mess though I would say Sindh and Baluchistan are worse...
