Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday said that the Thar coal would be used for power generation. The coal for some power plants would be imported for short time till Thar fields started production at commercial level, he added. "Today, I want to give Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah a good news. We will use Thar coal in coal-fired power plants in the country," he said addressing the chief minister, who was also present at FPCCI''s 38th Exports Awards distribution ceremony here.

Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan, Federal Commerce Minister Engr Khurram Dastagir Khan, Federal Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Resources Jam Kamal and Minister of State and Chairman Board of Investment Dr Miftah Ismail, Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) President Mian Muhammad Adrees, Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) Chief Executive Officer S M Muneer, United Business Group (UBG) Chairman Iftikhar Ali Malik, Senior Vice President FPCCI Abdul Rahim Janoo, FPCCI vice presidents, former vice president, In-Charge WTO Cell at FPCCI Engr. M.A. Jabbar and a large number of business leaders were present.

The Prime Minister assured the business community that his government wanted maximum participation of the private sector in economic and development activities. The government, he said, had always made consultations with the business community before taking any decision regarding the economy. In response to a demand of the FPCCI President, the Prime Minister announced the formation of Business Advisory Council under his chairmanship.

"We will form the business development council, which will be chaired by me. This will be a very good platform for regular interaction between the government and the business community. This interaction should be at least once in every three months." The council, he added, would help promote industrialisation and trade in the country. Nawaz Sharif also supported the FPCCI''s demand that import of new plants and machinery be zero-rated to accelerate industrialisation in the prosperity. "This will create more employment opportunities, essential for peace and security in the country." "We should encourage installation of new plants and machinery. More industrialisation will be only when import of plants and machinery is facilitated and exempted from the duty," he said. "We will seriously consider this demand."

at moment 2 companies with total plan production of 2000 mw in next 10 years.. only 300mw in next 5 years..

i think its too little , too late

govt needs to invest itself, coal is not lucrative business these days unless govt takes the intiative

.
PMLN should be renamed: PFL = Pakistan Future League. They never tell us what they have done already. Only what will be done :D :D :D

You are wrong. 2000mw plan is for 2018, 10 year plan is to produce 10000mw from thar. And also replace imported coal with thar coal yo use in other coal PP.

by 2017 end , the only plant that will be operational is engro 1. with 330 MW
by 2020 engro 2 with 330mw.
mean while sino-sindh has just recently got approval for 1400 mw plants. that will come online after 2020

so yes the plans are for 8,000 mw(4000 engro committed, 4000 sino-sindh not committed yet) but confirmed plan is just 2000 mw
and only engro 1 will be completed by end of 2017/or early 2018

PS
good job by the govt in facilitating private investors but without govt investment dont expect much

even engro 1 will divide its power between providing KEL power and using some of it for their plants in the region and they are getting subsidised gas in return as far as I remember for investing here. And yes it seems there is no real plan to finish power crisis or build dams other then tell the world it is nice to invest in these plans.

the world is moving on from coal. from what I have read Pakistan has a vast resource of Hydro potential and the Chinese have deep wallets and workers ready to build them. I think Pakistan fears India might cut off it's water on the Indus??

but coal is still a viable option or even natural gas.

PMLN should be renamed: PFL = Pakistan Future League. They never tell us what they have done already. Only what will be done :D :D :D

Its because they expect you to have eyes wide open which can see, and them open eyes, can see what they've done.....motor ways, new dams, metro transit systems, expansion of hydro power, nuke, solar and other electric production, new motorways, airports and expansion, focus on education, investments from China, should I continue? This might be a long post if I listed everything they've done. You should at the least be appreciative of the work that someone does for their country, and it helps average, poor Pakistanis.

Coal is readily available and can quickly be used in replacing power generators current using expensive furnace oil. Hydro footprint is also growing rapidly but these are two entirely separate issues. Many of our US based companies like GE, Schlumberger and many from Europe are super interested in getting a piece of the big energy pie in Pakistan. I won't be surprised if GE wins the power plant conversion work, worth a few billion easily with expansion phases.

All your above mentioned projects are nowhere except on the paper. Heck, even that widely acclaimed solar power pilot project in Bahwalpur is shunned from further investments:

And whatever it is producing now is worthless in terms of efficiency:

And what ever happened to that infamous Nandipur project?
PUNJAB Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said the Nandipur power plant machinery of the project is lying at Karachi port owing to which the material has rusted while precious equipment was also stolen.

Nandipur power plant machinery is imported from China and so is Lahore metro bus fleet of 45 buses. If metro buses landed at Karachi port and went to Lahore, why doesn’t the Punjab chief minister also make the same effort for Nandipur power plant machinery?

People can't eat and drink your metros, foolish American! :D :D :D

.
This may be higly polluting. Make sure that proper pollution control equipment are installed.

.
Power generation using coal is not eco friendly. Pakistan should better find some other source of energy fast.
