Thailand has signed a purchase order for 20 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine develop by Pfizer (PFE.N) and BioNTech (22UAy.DE) to be delivered before the end of this year, its health minister said.

Details of the deal, delivery timeframe and the vaccine's approval by the Food and Drug Administration would be worked out in about a month, Thai Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Thursday.

Thailand also plan to buy 5 million doses of Johnson & Johnson's (JNJ.N) single-shot vaccine within this year, Anutin said.

Thailand is racing to secure vaccines for its mass immunisation campaign that started on Monday, two months after it was hit by its biggest coronavirus outbreak so far, driven by highly contagious variants.

The programme had relied heavily on its reserved 61 million doses of locally-made AstraZeneca (AZN.L) vaccines, but the government has tried to diversify its sources to meet its target of acquiring 100 million doses by year-end.

About 4.1 million of Thailand's more than 66 million people have so far received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Why are they giving credit to Pfizer for development of the vaccine? AFAIK, it was completely developed by BioNTech.

No, mRNA technology was licensed by the University of Pennsylvania to BioNTech and Moderna

Under the terms of the agreement, BioNTech and the lab of Drew Weissman, MD, PhD, at Penn will exchange their in-depth knowledge and experience in mRNA research and development to advance the discovery of novel vaccine candidates. Penn will be responsible for a dedicated preclinical research program from discovery through to the completion of IND-enabling studies in up to ten infectious disease indications. BioNTech will be eligible to receive an exclusive worldwide license to further develop and commercialize product candidates arising from the research collaboration. If proprietary Penn technology is part of a new mRNA-based vaccine, the university will be eligible to receive additional milestone payments and royalties from BioNTech. Detailed financial terms were not disclosed.

mRNA technology is super valuable right now - I guess the arrangement is for the license on the basis they have developed the technology to work with mRNA but mRNA technology itself cannot be patented so others will come along and develop more advanced variants of mRNA.

AstraZeneca does need to invest in mRNA - it is now a proven toold that is safe and successful basis for the development of future vaccines for a suite of other viruses eg aids, and not just Covid.

Why is china not collaborating with biontech to produce mRNA vaccine in china , China is capable of producing hundreds of millions of vaccines a month

Did you not read their own scientist admittal their vaccine is not good; mRNA is the best way; he was silenced by their CCP goons.

Now they are working on their own mRNA which will no doubt be stolen or hacked from an institution. Lord forbid what could result from that.

That's not true , it's mostly a western propaganda twisting his words , many countries including Pak trialed Chinese vaccine before it's adminsteration . The trial showed the vaccines are pretty effective and they use century old technology with no side effects .
China itself has inoculated almost 900 millions of Chinese vaccines they arent too stupid to do that , although it's wise to use different vaccines not rely on single one, not to forget sinopharm and sinovac are WHO approved
Even Russians Sputnik is very effective the problem is the logistics

Fosun pharma had invested a good amount with BioNTech and there are already other mRNA vaccines in work in China.

Good information that I was unaware of - that still doesn't explain how Pfizer is given credit for 'development' of vaccine. Looks like the major contribution for vaccine development belongs to BioNTech.

BioNTech created BNT162b2 COVID vaccine in a lab using IP licensed from Penn and then partnered with Pfizer on the trials and mass production. Pfizer is mass producing the vaccine and its mass manufacturing IP is more valuable than the IP for BNT162b2. Expressed another way, Pfizer can replace BioNTech by partnering with Penn or licensing the Penn mRNA technology in-house.

BioNTech can't go solo since it requires a large pharma with global reach and know how in mass production.

Agreed, you need large pharmas to mass produce vaccines, but western media always gives credit to Pfizer for 'development'. It's like giving SII credit for the oxford vaccines.

Pfizer isn't even that good, using only a small part of the virus for immunization unlike sinovac so it will lose against mutated viruses. Also mRNA is also a brand new vaccine type and there are side effect that is new so I prefer having other people testing it out first. mRNA it is cheap to buy so that is why 'advertising' for it so very good.

Actually not so, i lost my good friend 2 days ago - this useless china vaccine did not help for any people with diabetes. Lost another relative and buried him yesterday.
I dont care whether it is west or east; they are same coins of imperialists - same dogs. we need independent vaccine production and research.
