PARIS: Engine decision approaches for TF-X fighter

Ankara is close to defining the engine plans for its TF-X future fighter, as Turkish Aerospace Industries and BAE Systems cement their partnership on the project.

In February Turkey picked BAE as its partner for the TF-X activity, which seeks to develop an advanced fighter to replace its air force's Lockheed Martin F-16 fleet from about the end of the next decade. A heads of agreement signed by the UK and Turkish governments committed the parties to a four-year design phase, with the eventual goal of delivering an operational aircraft from 2029-2030.

"There will be a mixed engineering team for every part of the aircraft," says Mustafa Cavcar, TAI's executive vice-president for TF-X. The project is making a "real start" this month, he adds, with the rest of this year to be spent making preparations for BAE engineers to work with their TAI counterparts in Ankara.

A design freeze is likely in late 2018 or 2019, he says, following decisions on key equipment such as the fighter's engines.

Cavcar says Turkey's SSM defence procurement agency is poised to announce its planned propulsion strategy for the twin-engined type. A competition has attracted interest from the Eurojet consortium, which produces the Eurofighter Typhoon's EJ200, as well as GE Aviation and Rolls-Royce. A new afterburning engine with a maximum rating of more than 25,000lb-thrust (111kN) is likely to be required.

"The target is to decide on an engine supplier before the end of this year," he says.

It is not known how many production aircraft will be built for the Turkish air force, which Flight Fleets Analyzer records as operating 245 F-16C/Ds. Cavcar notes that the new fighter's capabilities will exceed those of its current inventory, so a one-for-replacement is unlikely. An international market is also already in TAI's sights.

"We will have an export market for this aircraft," he says, pointing to other current F-16 operators – including in Europe – as potential future sales targets. "After the second or third year [of the design phase] customers will be seeing more details."

While the programme is in its early days, Cavcar says the partners have gained strong financial and political support from Turkey and the UK. "We are feeling the very strong support of both governments behind us," he adds, noting that he would also like to see the type in UK service.

Within the scope of Turkish Indigenous Fighter (TF-X) Program, ASELSAN proposals have been submitted to the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) for the:
• Integrated RF System (IRFS) Technology Development Project which includes the radar and electronic warfare capabilities
• Radar Absorbing Composite Structure Technology Development Project.

. . . . . . .
Erdogan only weakens your air force with his tantrum like decisions.

You cant throw away usa technological and warfare doctrines that easily with unproven indegenous systems. You need to replace them with russian doctrines and technology. All our custumers are happy, like india, azerbayjan, china.

If you turks want to survive you need to form an alliance with us.

Russia+Turkey will destroy nato.

They are your true enemies. You must buy Pak Fa and russian tanks. We will supply you with all advanced goodies like kalibr cruise missiles with nuclear warheads.

You just need to obey to tsar putin.

That's a holly fu*ked brain ! @cabatli_53 isn't it !

Cause we cancelled HQ9 project, copied their missiles and offer them on the market (for example Poland).

so you fooled the Chinese into a full technology transfer at the cost of 1 set of missiles, canceled purchase contracts, cloned the product, offered for sale to Arab brothers, then accused of China copycat (of Russia), and insulted them on a Pakistani forum. Who will do business with you in the future? Maybe the Greek does have a point

There is no such thing....you are quoting a banned member whom claimed things out of his back.

BAE exec: We'll have a hand in a next-gen fighter 'one way or another'

FAIRFORD, England — BAE Systems wants a stake in any new European fighter program, says the executive running the British company’s combat air activities.

“I can’t say what it will be, and I can’t say when. … One way or another, the U.K. and BAE will have an involvement," said Chris Boardman, managing director of BAE’s military air and information activities, told reporters at a briefing at the Royal International Air Tattoo, known as RIAT, being held here.

Industry executives at the show said it wasn’t just the British who are watching possible developments of the program. Sweden has shown an interest, as well, said one executive.

The RIAT briefing was called to announce the Typhoon jet built by BAE and others had reached another milestone in its development as a multirole aircraft with the first test firing of the Brimstone 2 ground attack missile, but the briefing was largely hijacked by questions about the British reaction to the Franco-German proposal July 13 to jointly develop a new fighter jet.

France and Germany agreed to study jointly developing a new fast jet to succeed Dassault Aviation’s Rafale in French Air Force service and the Panavia Tornado jets being used by the Germans following a joint Cabinet meeting held in Paris.

Other joint defense programs were also proposed, including an air-to-ground missile and an updated version of the Tiger attack helicopter.

The two countries want to put together a roadmap to develop a new fighter as early as the middle of next year, a timeline executives at the tattoo said was highly ambitious given the pace of agreeing European joint programs in the past.

BAE already jointly produces the Typhoon with Airbus and Leonardo of Italy and has a significant stake in the Lockheed Martin-led F-35 program that would likely be a rival to any new jet.

Boardman said that regardless of how plans for the European jet matured, BAE was already involved in a new next-generation fighter in a recently agreed deal with Turkey to help develop the TF-X jet with Turkish Aerospace Industries

“We have engineers deploying to Turkey as we speak to start work,” he said.

He said BAE also had a memorandum of understanding with Japan on possible development of a new fighter.

Some executives at the show were wondering whether the Franco-German move was part of the fallout from Britain’s plans to exit the European Union. One executive said it could raise questions about the future of joint industry programs in the Lancaster House bilateral defense treaty between London and Paris.

The 2010 treaty led to BAE forming a joint project with Dassault and other leading British and French companies to develop a future unmanned combat air vehicle operational technology demonstrator in a program valued at nearly $2 billion.

Boardman dismissed suggestions the program could be compromised by the new fighter proposal. He said he had seen no letup in the pace of discussion over the next phase of the program.

A decision is expected by the end of the year to OK production of the demonstrator, said Boardman.

I don't think that Japan is going to co-develop a fighter with UK. The Brits are clutching at any straw right now. It seems like TF-X is a really important project for them. Good.

Maybe TAI can get involved in the proposed 5th gen jet fighter that France and Germany proposed too.

Sorry but in mind of the political climate between Germany and Turkey I think a co-development of joint German-Russian-fighter is more likely.
