Assassins of former Army chief honoured at Akal Takhat
General A.S. Vaidya, Chief of the Army Staff, flanked by Lt. General K. Sundarji (left) and Major General K.S. Brar, outside Shri Harmandir Sahib at the Golden Temple in Amritsar on June 19, 1984, after Operation Blue Star.
The apex clergy of the Sikh community and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), appeared to have stirred another controversy as they once again honoured the assassins of the former Chief of Army staff, Gen A.S. Vaidya at the Akal Takhat on Wednesday.
While the Jathedar of the Akal Takhat, Giani Gurbachan Singh did not participate, the SGPC chief, Avtar Singh Makkar has been indisposed for sometime. The kin of Harjinder Singh Jinda and Sukhdev Singh Sukha, were honoured by the manager of Darbar Sahib, while Secretary of the SGPC, Dalmegh Singh was present on the occasion. Others who participated in the event that marked the 20th anniversary of their hanging, included the spokesman of the Dal Khalsa, Kanwarpal Singh and spokesman of the Damdami Taksal, Bhai Mokham Singh.
Jinda and Sukha were hanged on October 9, 1992 in Pune after they were convicted for assassinating Gen Vaidya on August 10, 1986. Both Jinda and Sukha were declared 'martyrs' of the Sikh community for avenging the "Operation Bluestar" and their portraits figure in the paintings museum in the Golden Temple complex. The anniversary of their hanging has been observed at the Akal Takhat ever since 1992, when special prayers are offered after the completion of the Akhand Path (uninterrupted recitation) of the Guru Granth Sahib.
On Wednesday, "siropa" (robes of religious honour) were bestowed on Jinda's brother, Bhupinder Singh and Sukha's mother Surjit Kaur. The event which follows closely after the recent attempt on the life of only surviving commanders of "Operation Bluestar", Lt Gen K.S. Brar has created ripples in the Punjab politics, where the opposition Congress and ruling alliance partner the BJP have expressed concern over the increasing space being granted to the pro-hardline sections with the Sikh politics.
The event is being connected to the decision of the SGPC to allow the construction of the memorial for those who died defending the faith in "Operation Bluestar" as well as recent incidents of honouring militants inside the Golden Temple complex. Congress leaders including PCC chief, Amarinder Singh, BJP leaders like Manoranjan Kalia and Balramji Das Tandon have voiced their opinion that recurrence of such events not only revived old wounds, but also created a fear psychosis among the minorities in Punjab.
