NEW DELHI: The overall developmental cost of Tejas Light Combat Aircraft has quietly zoomed past the Rs 13,000-crore mark, with the government sanctioning the extension of the fighter's "full-scale engineering development'' (FSED) till December 31, 2018.

This, in effect, means the Tejas developmental saga will now stretch across 35 years, sanctioned as the project was way back in 1983 at a cost of Rs 560 crore to replace the ageing MiG-21s.

Tejas, in fact, can now give the Arjun main-battle tank a run for its money in terms of years taken for full development. The tank project, after all, was first approved 36 years ago.

It is, of course, critical for India to boost indigenous defence production, importing as it still does 70% of its military hardware and software, but this probably is not the way.

"This is a very sorry state of affairs. Even after 27 years since LCA was sanctioned, it is yet to see light of the day,'' says the latest report of the parliamentary standing committee on defence, tabled in Parliament on Thursday.

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Aeronautical Development Agency and DRDO argue developing a supersonic fly-by-wire fourth-generation fighter from scratch, with international sanctions in place for several years, is an incredibly complex and tough task.

The project, after all, includes single-seater IAF, twin-seater trainer and naval LCA variants. With Tejas prototypes clocking 1,350 flights till now, the "final operational clearance'' for the IAF variant is now slated for December 2012.

"So, IAF should have its first Tejas squadron of 20 fighters by 2014-15. Even Swedish Gripen fighter's developmental cost was around Rs 12,640 crore,'' said an official.

India, however, is now going in for foreign engines to power even the Tejas Mark-II version after the indigenous Kaveri engine failed to pass muster after 20 years of development at a cost of Rs 2,839 crore.

Consequently, while the first 20 Tejas will be powered by the American GE-404 engines, the hunt is on for new more powerful engines for the next six Tejas Mark-II squadrons (16-18 jets in each).

The Rs 13,000-crore mark for the LCA project is breached even if the Kaveri fiasco is kept aside. For one, the FSED Phase-I, which finished in March 2004, cost Rs 2,188 crore.

The Phase-II, which was to be completed by December 2008 at a cost of Rs 3,301 crore, will now get over in December 2012, with additional funds of Rs 2,475 crore.

Moreover, in November last year, the government "accorded'' sanction for "continuing FSED of LCA till December 2018, with an estimated additional cost of Rs 5,302 crore''.

Amid all this, IAF is keeping its fingers crossed, grappling as it is with a free-fall in the number of its fighter squadrons, down to just 32 from a sanctioned strength of 39.5.

Also the first squadron of the Tejas LSPs will be active early 2011 (i.e ~20 aircraft)

The official was misquoted or quoted out of context, the Tejas to be inducted in 2014/15 is the Mark II version.

The first squadron of LSPs (Mark I) will be inducted at best end 2010, but most probably early 2011.

There is no Chinese or Italian AESA for fighter aircraft yet. AESA is very expensive, incredibly expensive, it won't be mainstream in the PAF.

few weeks back the radar is tested how it come into production directly?
and Search for VIxen 500e AESA..already offer to PAF...bt pak want new advance or any other variant of vixen 500e,,vixen 1000ES(the one for the gripen in development)

Telgi jaisa chutiya bhi 16000 carore ka gafala karta hain, aur ye project(Tejas) to hamare fayade ke liye hi hain.

no Indian will mind if cast goes to even 25000 carore.

A contract for procurement of 20 Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) in Initial Operational Clearance configuration was signed with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd on March 31, 2006. These LCA are likely to be inducted into the Indian Air Force (IAF) by March 2011.

In addition to the above contract for 20 LCA, a proposal for procurement of an additional 20 LCA in Final Operational Clearance configuration is being progressed. The specifications of the LCA are as per the Air Service Requirements framed by the IAF.

This information was given by Defence Minister Shri AK Antony in written reply to Shri Santosh Bagrodia and Shri Santaram Laxman Naik in Rajya Sabha today.

NEW DELHI - India expects to induct the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), already delayed by more than 15 years, into the Air Force by March 2011, said Indian Defence Minister A. K. Antony.

Antony provided the date in a written reply to the Indian Parliament March 8, adding that a high-level review is being conducted quarterly by the chief of the Air Staff and monthly by the deputy chief of the Air Staff.

The Air Force has already inducted 20 LCAs into the Initial Operational Clearance stage. The service has a requirement for more than 200 LCA-type aircraft.

LCA weapon installation is proceeding, with the integration of a multimode radar to the weapons suite nearing completion, Defence Ministry sources said.

"There was a delay in the development of LCA due to certain technical complexities and denial of critical technologies. $717.8 million was sanctioned for the development of LCA, which includes manufacture of eight numbers of limited series production aircraft. An additional $538.2 million has been approved by the government for LCA Phase-II program," Antony told Parliament.

Conceived in 1983, LCA is an advanced technology, single-seat, single-engine, supersonic, lightweight, all-weather, multirole, air superiority fighter designed for air-to-air, air-to-ground and air-to-sea combat roles.

India’s self-developed Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas will be based at the IAF’s brand new forward-operating base at Phalodi in Rajasthan. Medium-lift choppers, Mi-17s will also be stationed at the base which will be 102 km from the India-Pakistan border, said sources.

Uniquely, the new air base that was inaugurated four days ago is the first forward-operating airbase to be commissioned by the IAF in more than two decades. The first lot of the LCA -- a squadron of 20 aircraft -- is scheduled to be handed over to the IAF in 11 months from now. The second squadron will follow a year later -- both are being built at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) unit at Bangalore. Once handed over to the IAF, the LCA’s first base, briefly, will be at a station in South India, from where the fighters will move in batches to Phalodi, the sources said. Moving planes in small batches is a normal IAF procedure. Phalodi has the capacity to handle other aircraft besides deep penetration radars.

Defence Minister A K Antony had told Parliament last month that the first lot of the LCA would be delivered in March 2011. The Air Force is likely to accord ‘initial operational clearance’ by the end of this year.

Phalodi is the sixth IAF base in Rajasthan. It is located almost equidistant from the three existing IAF bases at Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and Nal (Bikaner). The IAF has two others bases in Rajasthan -- Suratgarh and Uttarlai (Barmer). Across the border opposite Phalodi are two major Pakistani military bases in Bahawalpur and Rahimyar Khan.

In the past two decades, the IAF had not commissioned or operationalised a new base as it had focused on improving infrastructure in the existing bases across the country -- some 70 in number. In the past two years, the IAF has reopened defunct advanced landing grounds at Nyoma, Fukche and Daulet Beg Oldie -- all in Ladakh. The forces have a requirement for more than 200 LCA-type aircraft to replace the ageing lot of MiG 21 series of fighters. An additional $ 538.2 million (about Rs 2,500 crore) has been approved by the government for the LCA Phase-II programme. For this, the engines are to be selected soon.

Tejas makes successful flight

Bangalore, Apr 23 (PTI) The maiden test flight of the most advanced of the nine 'Tejas' aircraft was today successfully carried out, bringing the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme "very close" to the Initial Operations Clearance.

It is the ninth test vehicle to join the flight line to undertake development flight trials of the LCA Tejas towards operational clearance for induction in the IAF by the end of the year, Defence Research Development Organisation said.

"Successful, copy book maiden test flight of Limited Series Production-3 (LSP-3) is significant on many counts," it said in a statement.

"With this successful flight, the LCA (Tejas) programme is very close to the Initial Operations Clearance, which is to be completed by December 2010. The remaining effort is mostly the flight testing and demonstration of sensors and weapon performance," it said.

QnA: How ill equipped are the Indian armed forces?

This is just an ugly rhetoric from a reporter who knew nothing or basically have no information on the project that been spread over 2 decades.

One has to understand that there is a whole lot of difference between date of considering a replacement for Mig-21 and the date when the go-ahead for the project was given with initial release of funds for the necessary infrastructure.

When Tejas was conceived ,there was literally no or less infrastructure that is required for a fighter development. What a clever joe considers is different from a gadha backend hole.what we see here is the reporter being the later.

The FSED(full scale engineering development)was only started in 1993 onlyyy and when the full funding was scantioned.From then subsequent TDs were built and flown.

The reporter goes on frenzy in saying that the projected was started in 1983- But he fails to understand a simple thing that there wasnt no ADA(Nodal Agency developing LCA) at that time.It was set-up in 84 and initial funding was released after 3 years.So much for a reporter that is against the development of a home based fighter and so much for people believing him :rofl::rofl:

After GOI got confidence in the project and the design submitted,FSED-II was sanctioned in 2001.This is the actual time line that has to be considered for a brainer and a no-brainer can consider any timeline to satisfy their orgasams and bashing of India :D

Again this idiotic reporter goes on his own way in making a serious headline for viewers.This might be the only report I had ever seen that considered a future date which is 8 years away :what:
He continues on saying that the project will continue untill DEC-2018,while the developers has put a deadline at 2015-16 for Mark-II version.

Threads like this (India bashing ,while lacking knowledge of project) started appearing now and then every once in a week,while one thread that discusses about 4 J-10 crashes was closed.:argh::angry:

atleast Indians should be proud of this Tejas- It has seen no crash till date(even with the same imported engines) and a 4 th gen fighter development that took place in a country with no experience in developing one.{2nd gen HAL Marut was a fosil in works :P }
Since Indias closest rival is China (as well as the starter of the thread) lets compare the developmental efforts of same 4th gen fighters on both sides.Tejas Vs J-10(aka a copy of already developed fighter Israeli Lavi)
