Defense PSU HAL has been unable to properly maintain, update or equip IAF with the essentials needed to put forth a respectable challenge for the rival Pakistan Air Force. Inadequate training also provided to rookie pilots is also one of the main reasons the Indian Air Force is heading towards decline, as far as maintaining standards is concerned.

On Tuesday morning, the dismal condition of IAF further came to light when a Jaguar fighter crashed 13 km east of Allahabad. Fortunately, the two pilots were able to eject themselves and escape the ordeal. The hapless condition of IAF can be judged from the fact that it is down to 35 squadrons, with some of them existing only on paper.

This was the sixth fighter IAF jet to crash since January of this year, a stat that should ring alarm bells for India. India’s hostile neighbour Pakistan has one of the best air forces in the world and so does China. India is involved in border disputes and has militarily been confronted by both Pakistan and China in the past. The IAF has a battle on its hands with its fast-depleting fighter strength, which will progressively get worse with the virtually obsolete MiG-21s and MiG-27s headed for long-delayed retirement.

Whilst the Chinese have almost three times the number of fighter jets than India, Pakistan Air Force is also flying close to the Indians. Pakistan Air Force has 21 combat squadrons at their disposal, with four more soon to be added to the overall quantity. India and Pakistan have fought three wars with each other, and it is a known fact that PAF has always bested the Indian Air Force in encounters.

The Indian Air Force has recorded more than 1,100 crashes since 1970, mainly due to technical defect and maintenance faults. Since 2011-2012, the Indian Air Force has lost 15 helicopters and 35 aircrafts in crashes.

Pakistan’s M.M.Alam is one of the most celebrated pilots in the world. He holds the world record for shooting down five Indian fighter aircraft in 55 seconds. Pakistan Air Force has also been instrumental in the Operation Zarb e Azb that has been waged by the country’s military against militants. With accuracy and precision, the PAF has been instrumental in taking out militants’ hideouts.

Sir there is one ambiguity in minds of all if U can put light on one aspect of procurement for Indian Armed Forces. Congress led govt had ear marked quite substantial amount of money for MMRCA deal and hence Rafale was selected. But then came BJP govt and cancelled or stalled the deal with main concern as it can not be afforded as it would consume money at the cost of other defense procurement. But the fact is that India's forex reserves had crossed $325 billion for the first time in history which was not the case with Congress led government. My question is what actually led BJP govt to cancel/stall MMRCA deal?

Congress didn't set aside any money. India couldn't pay for Rafale without putting other critical equipment purchases at risk. That's why Congress dragged the MMRCA negotiations so as to thrust the problem on BJP as congress knew it had nil chance of forming the govt for next 5 years.

India has a huge economy and those forex reserves are needed as buffer against any future crisis like wild fluctuations in exchange rate, quantitative easing by US etc.

Indian Govt revenue also has multiple claimants of which major ones are infrastructure, education and health. Capex intensive Infrastructure overhaul is urgently needed to kickstart the economy.

India also has huge armed forces and their salary and pensions and other opex take a major chunk (~75 %) of total defense budget which leaves a little room for buying rafales

Comparing to China - Makes sense to some degree (see the last line of my post)
Comparing to Pakistan - Simply not true. God forbid there is air war, IAF can do circles around PAF.

Do note, IAF will not go head to head with Chinese Airforce.

This is a common disease among Pakistanis to compare everything with India be it Military, people or Misc while forgetting the size of their country, population,Economy,Military and their deep rooted inferiority complex.

How can crash rate of IAF can be compared with PAF which is not even close to Israeli Air Force both quantitatively and qualitatively, how many Gen 4++ Aircraft does PAF operates ?

But since you're curious to compare IAF crashes with PAF than you should be aware of the fact that small PAF suffer 8 -10 aviation crashes per year I.e a crash per month.

In 2015 alone at least 2 Mirages,1 k 8,2 MI 17 crashed.

Not only running short of combat jets, the Indian Air Force (IAF) also does not have enough fighter pilots.

The latest report of a parliamentary panel has sounded alarm bells ringing on the acute shortage of fighter pilots in the IAF, claiming that it could be one of the reasons for high rate of accidents.

The IAF claims that its fighter crash rate has marginally improved over the years but it continues to face serious shortage of aircraft.

The current fighter squadron strength of IAF is 35 against the desired 42. If that was not enough, the shortage of fighter pilots means lesser number of sorties.

In its latest report, the standing committee of Parliament pointed out that it was astonished to learn that IAF’s pilotcockpit ratio was only 0.81 for fighter jets.

Compared to other air forces the situation is really grim. The panel also noted that pilotcockpit ratio in the US is 2:1 and even in Pakistan it is 2.5:1.

The sanctioned pilot to cockpit ration in IAF is 1.25 for fighters, 1.5 for transport planes and 1 for helicopters.

The committee takes serious view of the fact that our squadron strength is already short of what has been authorised by the Government and moreover, insufficiency in number of available pilots in the Air Force further deteriorates our operational capabilities,” said the parliament panel headed by Major General (retd.) B.C Khanduri.

The IAF reported 83 accidents between May 2007 and January 2015. The panel also claimed that there was a problem in the training of pilots which is contributing to frequent accidents.

“From the above information, it is evident that there is either lacuna in training that is being imparted to our pilots and support officials or the systems installed are technically illequipped,” said the panel adding that onus of accident was on the senior management of IAF.

The panel has noted that the fighter squadron strength of IAF will reduced to a paltry 25 by 2022.

To overcome this critical shortage, the NDA Government recently went for a fast-track purchase of 36 French Rafale multi-role jets after scrapping the acquisition programme for 126 of these fighters initiated by the UPA government.

The Air Force hopes to increase the number of Su-30 MKIs in the coming years to cope with the deficiency. It is also looking at the induction of Rafales and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) before the proposed deal with Russia.

So a third of a squadron is gone.......hmm...very nice.....

A bunch of uneducated claims made with no real reporting sense. Why do pieces in news papers make you wonder who wrote them. Yes we are a strong air force but to dismiss the Indian air force is a mistake, and especially quoting the ridiculous 21 squadrons statement because counting our older planes is a joke..
We are moving in the right direction, and with the sale of the thunders to other nations we will have some much needed funds to spare for the air force to further expand, but at this moment Indian air force is a strong air force which will not be easy to reckon with. Maybe give it a few years and while our block 3 is inducted and India is working on its LCA(sorry do not have confidence in their fly by dates) we will have an upper hand. Till then we can defend our air space well, but can not match India plane for plane. Granted they have shoddy maintenance, reduced funds with Su 30s unable to fly because of parts, and lower number of pilots then needed, they still have numerical advantages and their Su 30s are good planes.

But yes the lack of Rafales in larger numbers makes the Indian air force very deficient against China and in no position to try and claim air superiority in any war.

This is total propaganda to artificially exaggerate Pakistan's abilities and underestimate India's capabilities. PAF still has old fighters that are falling from skies like flies, F-16s which may have kill button installed by US and fourth generation JF-17s. Pakistan needs J-10C and J-31 for air force and J-11D for Navy.

India had technologic superiority in every air war, but lets look at the casualties.

1959- Indian jet shot down near Rawalpindi by Sabres, first aerial victory in the Pak-Indo conflict goes to Pakistan.

1965, right before the war- Indian jet was intercepted and forced to surrender at Ran of Kutch

1965 war- 16 Pakistani jets lost compared to 110 Indian jets in DOGFIGHTS alone.

1967- We also kicked your ally's *** too, Pakistani pilots shot down 11 Israeli jets in 6 day war

1971- 29 Pakistani jets were lost compared to 59 Indian jets according to independant researches, even though India says its maximum losses were estimated at around 130.

1979/1988 Afghan war- Kicked another one of your ally's *** by shooting down 8 intruders (4 Su-22s, 1 Su-25, 2 Mig-23s, and one AN-26)

1999- One Indian jet and helicopter shot down.

Please dont underestimate us again.
