KARACHI:

Tata Nano, the world’s cheapest car, will be assembled and sold in Pakistan after business groups of Pakistan and India have completed initial talks to bring the car across the border.

IMGC Global chairman Shaikh Amjad Rashid told The Express Tribune that his group with an initial investment of $10 million will assemble the low-priced Nano in Pakistan amid coordination with Tata Group of India. It has been decided that an existing assembly plant will be used initially for assembling the 623cc car.
The group has received a letter of intent from Tata Group, said Rashid.

The price of the car in the local market is still to be decided. The car came to the streets of India in 2008 at Indian rupees 100,000.

Resumption of dialogue between the two countries has revitalised many joint investment plans and investors on both sides have increased their contacts, said Rashid. He said that Indian trade secretary Dr Rahul Khullar during his visit to Pakistan assured Pakistani investors that barriers in the way of joint investment projects will soon be removed. Dr Khullar also promised that Pakistani traders will be allowed to set up trade offices in India.

Pakistani and Indian businessmen are increasing their contacts after the start of secretary level composite dialogue for increasing trade between the two neighbouring countries. The dialogue is expected to pave the road for better bilateral trade as well as joint ventures.

According to Pakistani traders, after the removal of non-tariff barriers there will be vast opportunities for exporting cement, marble and textile products to India while Pakistan will be able to acquire low-cost technology.

Coming this year - Tata's 40km/litre diesel Nano

Tata Motors is planning to launch a Nano model that will run 40 kilometres on a litre of diesel, matching the mileage of a typical 180cc motorcycle. It will be the most fuel-efficient car in India.

A senior executive of Bosch India, which is helping Tata Motors develop the engine for the model, said, “We have worked with Tata Motors for Nano’s petrol version and we are working with it for the diesel version too. The car has a two-cylinder, 700cc engine which develops healthy power without compromising on fuel economy. Although official test figures have not been revealed, we expect it to run 40 km on one litre of diesel.”

A Tata Motors spokesperson said: “You are aware that Tata Motors continuously improves its products. But we do not provide guidance on our innovations.”

At 40km/litre, the running cost of the new Nano will be Rs 1/km. The capacity of the fuel tank is expected to be 15 litres.

For Tata Motors, the diesel version could finally attract customers opting for two-wheelers – the original idea behind the Tatas’ Rs 1 lakh car project. For instance, Bajaj Pulsar 180, which costs Rs 78,000 (ex-showroom, Mumbai), runs 40 km on a litre of petrol.

However, Bajaj Auto, too, is working on a petrol car with Renault and Nissan and aims to offer 40km/litre. The car is slated for launch in 2012.

Nano is the largest-selling Tata model in India with monthly sales of around 8,500. The country’s largest selling car, Maruti Alto, records monthly sales of 25,000 a month.

With increased fuel economy, Tata Motors is aiming to target Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest car maker, whose unique selling proposition is mileage. It markets Tata Indica on the basis of its mileage of 20-25 km/litre, claimed to be the best in the industry.

Although the price of the diesel Nano is yet to be finalised, market experts say it will be 15-20 per cent more than the petrol version. The base version of Nano costs Rs 1.5 lakh in Mumbai (ex-showroom).

The model is expected to do well as diesel is subsidised in India, unlike petrol. In Mumbai, unbranded diesel is 33 per cent cheaper than petrol.

From the low of 509 units in November last year, Tata Motors has been able to increase Nano sales through network expansion and easier availability of finance. The company recorded sales of 8,707 units last month.

The petrol version of Nano, which gives 20-25 km/litre, and Tata Indica are the most fuel-efficient cars in India at present.

Adams Revo was a failure... the same can be said abt NANO ... better launch indian made bikes in Pakistan ...

Tata NANO just crossed 10,000 sales per month this April, so you can NOT compare to REVO..

Seriously, Pakistan doesn't need that pos to be assembled or solid in Pakistan. Pakistani automobile manufacturers and companies need to be subsidize domestic auto companies. Ban the pos tata it is one ugly hideous cheap flimsy low quality car, in European markets the car failed miserably it would also fail miserably in US.

The car has yet to even go on sale in Europe yet, so what are you talking about?

S.Korean Daewoo's HCV business was taken over by Tata few years back. I think this include the Daewoo branded Commercial Vehicles(Buses,Trucks) in Pakistan. if true, Tata has presence in Pakistan already.
edit: include Range Rover,Land Rover they are also sold in Pakistan?

.
TATA NANO is not a 1 lakh car any more , the on-road price of the base modal is 1.6lakh and 2.05lakh for the top modle...

Yaar,

These cars are new and can be priced in under 250k range.
Cuore is above 700k now.
Even a Sh*tty car like Mehran is around 500-600k.
And even when new it is full of problems, when you buy a used one...god help you mate.

If this car is reasonably reliable, no way it is not a good thing to introduce in Pakistan.
