Tarim Desert Highway

. . . .

I saw a program how by trial and error over many years, China developed the above method of preventing soil erosion. The length of the square had to be just right. Too big and it will be blown away. Too small and it will be too much work. Imagine all these grass had to be manually planted on both sides of the road all along the hundreds and hundreds of miles or the road will get buried in sand. A LOT OF WORK !!!

Two different ways to build a highway through the desert.

One method is to plant rows of trees (via drip irrigation) along the highway to prevent the desert from encroaching on the highway.

An alternative is to build an elevated highway. Have slots along the side to permit sand to slide down a decline and onto the ground. The design would prevent sand from being blown up the incline. Gravity will pull it back down from airborne sand in a dust storm. Also, a road sweeper can push sand into the side slots.

Building such elevated roads in the sand is not economical.
And u have to consider the disastrous wind.

Yes, so this highway is one of the most expensive road in the world. Taklamakan Desert is a flow desert, maitaining this road across the desert costs a lot everyear. The course across desert is about 450 km(the whole mileage about 520km), every 2 km, they need to build a well, bumb station, entire drop irrigation system, on each bumb station a couple observe.

Tarim may be the largest basin on earth surrounded by truly high mountains.Really magnificent a place if all the sand be blowed away.
