Tamil leader becomes opposition leader in Sri Lanka

If MR really wanted to shut his opponents mouth he should have acted like present President and PM. That means by politically strangling the main opposition, put his crony on the leadership position on the opposition party, giving no voice for opponent speakers in the parliament etc.,

Well said.

It took 25 years to end this bloody war. Hope they compete each other in economy instead of cheap shots and use of internal war for political purpose which can again ruin the future of Srilanka.
We don't want to see unrest there again. My wish for peace and prosperous srilanka to enjoy high standard life.

The Sri Lankan government just appointed a separatist and LTTE supporter as the leader of the opposition. The PM himself is a boot licker of the USA. Great times ahead for Sri Lanka.

Your wishes are appreciated though.

Nope just an example.

On BOTH dialog TV and PEO Tv at the same time
There are much more incidents like Eknaligoda ,Rathupaswala ,BBS's actions being ignored and many signs of Sri Lanka going towards another war

Oh yes. The alleged murders of Eknaligoda and few others, Army firing at Rathupaswala. These are common features of long running government. Given time you would pick several such incidents from this current government also. So These aren't any credible evidence for Sri Lanka being dragged on to a dictatorship.

Also about BBS. It has got nothing to do with MR gov. The snag is that MR didn't respond to the BBS threat.

.
@HeinzG Check out this guy's dictatorship....................

On Tuesday 1/09/2015 Udaya Gammanpila, member of a small politcal party, requests this from the speaker in Sri Lanka's parliament:

“We military crushed an armed struggle by separatists. Yet, if these separatist elements were empowered politically through federalism, we cannot undo it. We seek you as the custodian of this Parliament not to let it happen.”

Many Sri Lankans feel exactly the same. But as soon as these words were out of Udaya's mouth Ranil Wickremesinghe - Sri Lanka's prime minister mind you - jumped up like a madman and started ranting and raving screaming
"...leaders of small groups cannot be allowed to speak here! ...we will not allow such speeches!"

Pretty disgusting behaviour by Ranil. But we guess this must be yahapalanaya, where people cannot even speak freely in parliament unless they toe Ranil's line. He is displaying all the qualities of a dictator and his fan boys and girls cheer him on with adoration.

. .
But some of our potheads think full suit make a person a gentleman.

Spot on. People like @Godman and @Gibbs have their heads so far up Ranil's a$$ that they can't extricate themselves.

Not only that, Ranil has a stranglehold on the media as well. The state media is in his hands and his family or his contacts control or influence several private TV, radio and newspaper outlets. When he goes into a rage when a perfectly legitimate request is made as above it goes to show just what kind of a person he is.

Let's look at the last 24 years and the leadership of the two main political parties in Sri Lanka - the United National Party (UNP) ahd the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP):

1991
Leader of the UNP: Ranil Wickremesinghe
Leader of the SLFP: Sirimavo Bandaranaike

1992
Leader of the UNP: Ranil Wickremesinghe
Leader of the SLFP: Chandrika Kumaratunga

2001
Leader of the UNP: Ranil Wickremesinghe
Leader of the SLFP: Mahinda Rajapakse

2015
Leader of the UNP: Ranil Wickremesinghe
Leader of the SLFP: Maithripala Sirisena

During this period Ranil has lost a total of 29 elections and not allowed anyone else to take leadership of the UNP. Any other self-respecting leader would have stepped aside after leading his party to so many successive defeats. But not this man.

Ranil does not believe in term limits, either within his party or for himself nationally. He has kept control of the UNP with an iron fist, filling its inner circle with his cronies and exacting revenge on those who dare to challenge his grip on the party. More than twenty years of authoritarian control; a man with an insatiable lust for power.

.
Sirisena is going to become the worst president of all the time.
Just surpassing MR.

. . .
Hope, these jahapalana supporters will get pissed off by Sirisena soon.
I've never seen such a cunning politician before.

I wouldn't count on it. The jahapalana supporters are so-self obsessed and they are fanatical devotees of Ranil and whatever he does.

Sirisena is somewhat cunning, but the real bastard here is Ranil.

I like how close to half the population voted AGAINST the UNP, but Sirisena makes his party join Ranil as if all of those people are happy with his policies.

But some of our potheads think full suit make a person a gentleman.

There are no more gentlemen left in Politics in Sri Lanka even the good ones that try to come doesn't get any place

The people voted Ranil because he is the lesser Evil and my advice is don't vote a person without knowing him.
Ranil was always similar to his uncle and I knew that weaklings and fake actors like Wimal and Gammanpila will try to act tough but the moment they open their mouth they will be seeing stars. Ranil is that kind of person

so spreading lies using State media during elections is also a common feature among long running governments?

Hope, these jahapalana supporters will get pissed off by Sirisena soon.
I've never seen such a cunning politician before.

As I said before I am not a supporter of Yahapalana government, even that name is ridiculous and unrealistic. 100% good governance is impossible and to make it more complicated the definition of "good governence" is different from person to person. I said it to many of my friends that Sirisena is weak before the elections and he couldn't even stand up and stop MR from getting nominations.

However my view of him has improved because he was able to take some hard and strict decisions a leader should make. Being strong and authoritarian is different, Mahinda abused his authority and allowed his brother ,sons and his entire extended family as well as his minions wreak havoc in the country.

The decision to create a committee to appoint the heads of State owned enterprises is one of the best decisions Sirisena/Ranil made. I hope that thanks to this people like Nishantha Wickramasinghe (Shiranthi Rajapaksa's brother) will not come and what he did to the SriLankan Airlines will not happen again

On what basis does one make RW lesser evil to MR? Do you want me to open RW history again?

so spreading lies using State media during elections is also a common feature among long running governments?

State media is a mouth piece for any government. Even today Yahapalana camp has cosolidated their hold on the state media network. So don't get pissed by it or make it a excuse to condemn MR.

Hope, these jahapalana supporters will get pissed off by Sirisena soon.
I've never seen such a cunning politician before.

Sirisena ain't a cunning politician. It's his backers that make the moves. The are extremely cunning and powerful.

Do you think Sirisena or even the UNP could pull out victory like what they had in the presidential election alone??

We are repeating the same thing all over again.
I respect your views but as Gibbs said before they are different

This discussion isn't going anywhere
There is no use in talking about it anymore its just a waste of time. Talking about the same thing in different ways, its now getting boring and I am sleepy, can't type anymore.

Will see in another thread:cheers:
