Talks on to buy Chinese subs

Bangladesh is an independent country and should use its own manpower and resources to keep away foreign agressions. Yet, I see here some people are waiting eagerly for a Chinese base on our shore. About submarine type, some people are trying to involve Pakistan when BD is purchasing Submarines directly from China. So, this kind of talk is less than childish.

Some people do not like even Song class, but like BN to buy Kilo class. However, China itself does not build this class for its own navy, it buys from Russia. So, in that case BN will have to ask Russia for Kilo purchases. SHW should ask Russia to increase its military loan by another $600 million to purchase three Kilo-class submarines.

One thing is BD will have to cut its coat according to the size of its clothe. Another point is, BN has no mission outside of the BoB. So, it should not pursue for an expensive class of submarine fleet that overburdens its budgets.

I agree with everything you said except for your opinion that the BN has no role outside of the Bay of Bengal.

We will have to be able to protect our maritime trade and shipping not just in our immediate vicinity but further on e.g. look at the Somali pirates. We need to be able to protect our ships which deliver our exports to western markets.

Our navy should primarily operate in the Bay of Bengal but be able to go further afield if required.

Submarines are definitely a total must.

Even if we have to protect our international trade from Somali pirates, I do not see any reason why submarines should be used there. Surface ships are good enough to escort our merchant ships. Usually gun boats lowered from a frigate/corvette chase the pirates in the sea. Anyway, there are already warships there from big countries in the horn of Africa. However, we do not now read news about any new activities of Somali pirates. Seems they have been subdued in the recent past.

I believe the BN will keep on surveying the depths in various points in the BoB and will do exercises with our surface ships, some posing as friend and some as enemy. The main role being to protect the Bay from aggression by our two big neighbours, therefore, our submarines will certainly not be deviated from this main role.

By the way, PN has ordered 6 units of either an improved (better than Song) Yuan class or more improved and larger Qing class new submarines to China. So, BN should take time and save money to buy better submarines from China. But, seeing our military's past records it is not conceivable that BN will go for the best ones.

Submarine with base facilities to be added to navy: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday said Bangladesh Navy would be equipped with 'submarine with base facilities' to make it a 'deterrent force'.

Two maritime patrol aircrafts will also be added to navy by this April, she said while commissioning the first locally built patrol craft ‘BNS Padma’ at Naval Base at Khalishpur in Khulna.

The prime minister said her government has bought several ships and among those some were upgraded to modern missile boats in last fiscal year.

Special naval force SWADS has been formed to play an active role in protecting maritime boundary, she added.

As part of short-term policy to modernise the navy, two helicopters and several missiles were procured to make BNS Bangabandhu, a frigate, upgraded, Hasina said.

The premier added that two highly modernised large patrol crafts fitted with missiles are now being given final touches in China while tanker for carrying fuel on waterway in country is almost complete.

“Five patrol crafts are being built at Khulna Shipyard among which, ‘BNS Padma’ is added to Bangladesh Navy today,” the prime minister said.

She also urged the navy personnel to keep vigil to protect the country’s maritime boundary as some powerful countries are emerging circling the maritime boundary.

The PM will join a rally on Khulna Circuit House ground from where she is expected to inaugurate 12 development projects.

The projects awaiting inauguration include reopening of Daulatpur Jute Mill, inauguration of newly built academic complex of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet), newly built Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman dormitory and new building of student welfare centre at Kuet, newly built cricket test venue at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium, new building of student dormitory and monument “Adamya Bangla”, Khulna Divisional Women Sports Complex hostel, Khulna Water and Sewerage Authority residences, newly built female student dormitory -- Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam hall at Khulna Medical College and new residential building of Khulna Shishu Hospital.

All this talk about submarine is encouraging. However the purchase date is still too far away to predict what we are going buy

That gives us more reason NOT to get song class, rather get a class of submarine that is quiet, with good endurance level and with weapon platform that can challenge indian target practice wish.

What makes you think that Song class is not good enough for BN .
