Talks on to buy Chinese subs

Shakhawat Hossain

Bangladesh is negotiating with China to procure submarines, said senior military officials on Monday.

‘Substantial progress has been made’ towards concluding the purchase deal, Armed Forces Division principal staff officer lieutenant general Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq told New Age during a news briefing held at the Falcon Hall of Bangladesh Air Force at Tejgaon in the capital.Abu Belal also told New Age that they would let the people know about the deal once it was finalised.

He, however, did not disclose the number of submarines the government wanted to buy for the Navy against the background of an enhanced geopolitical focus on the resource-rich Bay of Bengal.

Bangladesh has longstanding territorial disputes over the bay with neighbouring Myanmar and India. Bangladesh settled its maritime row with Myanmar last year and settlement of disputes with India now awaits the verdict of an international court.

Government officials hinted that there was a plan to purchase at least three submarines in the next few years.Besides submarines, Dhaka is also negotiating with Beijing to buy two frigates under a state-to-state purchase deal to boost the country’s naval strength, they said.
Beijing offered two of its old 053H2 frigates at a very low rate on the condition that Dhaka would bear the refurbishment and defence equipment costs for the off-the-shelf ships.
An estimated Tk 6.55 billion will be needed to add two frigates to the country’s existing frigate fleet of six.

The Armed Forces Division has been equipped and modernised to safeguard the country’s ‘exclusive economic zone’ in the bay, said major general Abdul Matin. He said arms purchase from China had increased over the last four years.

Bangladesh has procured tanks and 16 fighters from China during the present government.
The government also has inked a $1 billion deal with Russia to buy training fighters, choppers, and anti-tank missiles.

Agreed. According to what available in the book Type 41 (Yuan Class) with AIP, could be an option. But Pakistan recently negotiated with China to build a newer class submarine with AIP. Going by news report this new class Chinese sub would have enhanced capability than Yuan class. Perhaps, Bangladesh should negotiate to be part of the deal with Pakistan and China. This way Bangladesh could get better product and unit/logistic cost would come down. Not to mention BN would have chance to learn lots of things from both side.

Does anyone know anything beyond what's in the public domain. The sub issue has been going on for so long and
there has been just too many false dawns.

obviously they want to induct subs by 2019 but does that mean the first sub by 2019 or just begining the process of training infrastructure etc by 2019 or the full complement .... I read BNs initial plan is three subs....

This news suggests we are ready to place order..... Have read such things before hopefully this time things will materialise .

Had not seen any report before that quoted PSO level authority. But you are right there had been on and off news on sub. Only thing known about sub was that officers/crew got trained by Turkish navy sometime ago on submarine and base operation.Beyond that I have not seen any other meaningful development other than this one. Let's see what is cooking.

BN is, perhaps, constructing a naval base for the submarines before it orders purchases. I expect a three unit procurement from all the talks here and there. Maghnama near Cox's Bazar could have been selected for the base. It has the right surroundings and the sea is deep, a criteria for unnoticed exit and entrance.

Before going for new ones BN should look for 2-3 retired subs to start off and after getting familiarized order for new subs can be placed.

India and Burma are the only two countries that are trying to squeeze us by encroaching into our sea territory. So, we must get ourselves ready to face any eventualioties from any of these two countries. Now, do not please come up with that Indian childish crap that superpower India has this and that, and can take over a tiny country like BD in a 3-minute war.

seriously !!why would there be a situation where u will have to use submarines against India?

if u have come to such a situation..that means u have already lost the fight!! :P

We must not assume Ming submarine is the BN's most covetted target. Ming is already an old technology. Although, it is diesel-electric it giveas away its footprints that may make it vulnerable to an enemy attack. On the contrary, Song class/Type 039 is fitted with more modern technology that can surprise an enemy ship. BN is considering all the options. However, I believe BN will not opt for a Ming class, but will go for Song class, old off the shelf or new order made submarines. BN is already behind its schedule. So, it should not go for Ming class because by the time BN gets one, this type will be more obsolete. However, I would prefer two Song class and one old Ming class, the latter for use as a training ship for the sailors.

bd nany ke song class kina uchit ,buy song class its ideal for bd navy, @ 2,250 tons , 22 knots or 41km per/hr it offers a lot of space for torpedo's,AIP installment, improvements, upgrades etc its cost effective in maintenance & more wide in size then the ming class or romeo class which is around 1830 tons 16 knots per/hr
