The government controls less than 60 percent of the country, says Pentagon [Reuters]
The Taliban has captured a district in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province, the second area to fall to the group a week after they launched their so-called spring offensive.

Mahfoozullah Akbari, a spokesman for Kunduz police, said Taliban fighters attacked the district of Qala-e Zal "from several directions" on Friday, and took full control of the district by mid-morning on Saturday.

Akbari said security forces had put up tough resistance but were forced to retreat because reinforcements failed to arrive in time.

In a statement posted on their website, the Taliban said they had killed a number of soldiers, policemen and pro-government militia members and confiscated a huge cache of arms and ammunition.

Afghanistan has seen intensified Taliban attacks across the country, leaving Afghan forces - already beset by killings, desertions, and vacuums in leadership and morale - stretched on multiple fronts.

They have faced high casualties, up 35 percent in 2016 with 6,800 soldiers and police killed, according to a US watchdog.

Last month the Taliban delivered a painful blow to the government, with its fighters dressed in Afghan army uniforms killing at least 135 young recruits at a base near northern Mazar-i-Sharif city.

More than 16 years after they were driven from power, almost half of the country is either contested or under the control of the Taliban.

According to US military estimates released by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), the Afghan government can only claim to control or influence 57 percent of the country's 407 districts.

The word Government is no more in existence in Afghanistan. Northern Alliance is now just a militia backed by USA and India.

.
Kabul regime is either stupid or naive to escalate tensions with Pakistan.

Pakistan needs to escalate things further and suck ANA towards our border which will give Afghan Taliban plenty of breathing space to operate till they capture Kabul.

Are there any videos of the area taliban controll?what do people say about them in those areas

. .
They took Kunduz City in 2015 and lost it an an ANA counter-offensive.

I wonder if they learnt their lesson last time, and are trying a different approach by taking this district first?

Taliban is not a choice but if compare less devil vs giant assisted by another evil force WE need to support them:coffee:

Afghan security forces will now take a few selfies , declare victory and all will be well

.
I think by focusing too much on Kunduz and other northern provinces, Taliban want to prove that they represent entire Afghanistan not just Pashtuns or that their reach is every where in Afghanistan

Or a black market knock off.

AR type rifles aren't exactly hard to find and get. Insurgents don't tend to use them, because they're harder to keep clean, and use.

[Edit]: There are reports that the afghan taliban equipped their better trained, anti-daesh cells with AR rifles, along with body armor and helmets, bought from corrupt ANA soldiers and officials. Just an interesting note.

Or support neither, because the lesser devil is still a devil.

The afghan taliban have never been Pakistan's allies, even if Pakistanis have deluded themselves into believe such a thing. Let us never forget that when they were in power, they threatened to invade Pakistan, if Pakistan tried to enforce the international border.
