China's challenge is to land the troops needed for a ground mop-up operation, assuming 2 things.

1. Air and naval supremacy is achieved (US direct involvement will complicate things).
2. Taiwan is militarily broken by strikes.

If China cannot land enough troops during the first wave, the small landing force cannot withstand a counter-attack for long.

Do you really think the average Chinese mainlander is going to feel happy about seeing pictures of bloody Taiwanese mothers and children in the streets after air strikes? It's not like Taiwan first flew a jet over and bombed Tiananmen and now China is getting some retribution.

The only shooting to be done will be of Taiwanese Government officials by assassins.

One can be confident for doing something but doesn't mean they will just do it. it's about the right time and right situation, China didn't take over Hong kong and Macau untill 1997 and 1999, do you think China didn't have to ability to take them back from UK and Portugal before that?

He has a famous saying that goes:

translate:
The (strategic) trend/swing/course is mighty and mighty, those who follow it will prosper, and those who go against it will perish

Many people in China agreed with him, and the Xinhai revolution in 1911 that he led succeeded in overthrowing the last dynasty, the Qing Dynasty and become ROC.

The whole of China recorded history could be described as a cycle of stable dynasty and then deteriotion after a period, then revolution with chaos of warlords/factions fighting/competing with each other for control of China, and when things become clear that there is a winner, everyone else would then lessen resisting and rally together under one.

That is because the Chinese people remember how good it is to be united with peace and stability. After all, China is probably the civilization that enjoy the most organized and stable environment for most of human history.

And that statement that Sun Yat-Sen said, captured the sentiment that many Chinese would hold as almost self-evidence truth.

Planes from Taiwan conducted bombing runs on Shanghai as late as the 1960's and flew over Xiamen as far as the 1980's. They only stopped because the balance of air power started tilting towards mainland in the 1990's. I'm happy to use whatever means to unify the country from an American puppet regime on the island. The faster Taiwan's resistance is crushed, the fewer the civilian casualties.

Chinese and Vietnamese are similar peoples but not the same people, like Ukrainians and Russians, but people in Taiwan and mainland China are indeed the same people. this is why both government claim they represent the true China. Ukraine never claims it's the true Russia.
