You mean Vietnam declared national emergency and started total mobilization after all the main towns in its 3 provinces bordering China were nearly wiped out while Chinese citizens exercised Taiji at dawn？

You should watch a documentray（posted somewhere in this forum）made by the Germans at the time。

The crews were on the ground，shot some nice footages，and had interesting interviews with the Vietnameses。

The fact that Americans got a bad beating does not necessarily that the Chinese got treated the same。

You also forget to mention that the Chinese no longer uses cold war weapons or tactics.
