Taiwan media regulator wants less Korean content on TV
Posted: 04 January 2012 1508 hrs

TAIPEI: Taiwan's national media regulator, the National Communication Commission (NCC), announced Tuesday that it aims to reduce the amount of Korean television content broadcast in Taiwan, in a bid to encourage the development of locally produced shows, reported Korean media.

Taiwan television station Gala Television Corporation (GTV), which mainly broadcasts drama serials, has become the first to accede to the NCC's request to reduce the amount of Korean fare they carry, and will do so from June.

The NCC had previously called on GTV to broadcast at least one hour of Taiwanese content between 6pm and 12pm on weeknights, as well as increase the amount of non-Korean dramas they carry.

It had also asked GTV to ensure local programming makes up for at least 20 per cent of its broadcast content.

Although Korean pop music and drama serials have enjoyed massive popularity across Asia in recent years, it has also attracted criticism for smothering the growth of local content from some critics in countries like Japan and Taiwan.

Indeed, some Japanese even took to the streets in August last year, to protest against Japanese broadcaster Fuji TV for broadcasting what they deemed to be inordinate amounts of Korean television dramas

Korean content currently has 100% market share in primetime(6PM~12AM) hour slots in Taiwan, and Taiwanese government is calling it the cultural genocide of Taiwan, and is requiring one hour of non-Korean programming during the prime time hours(TV networks can broadcast Korean content for 5 hours then)

It seems there are more and more people don't like bangzi.
Well, Koreans understand the Taiwanese reaction, since the reported 100% primetime hour market share in Taiwan seemed too excessive. Taiwanese authorities are asking for just one hour slot out of six hours, and that's actually a modest request.

Yes,in China mailand we call the one who watches korean TV the retarded脑残.

Well, Taiwanese audiences don't bother with Chinese TV content.

If Taiwanese network broadcasters can't schedule Korean content due to this restriction, then they will schedule Japanese or even Taiwanese content, not Chinese content.

. .
Taiwanese are Chinese.
Genetically that's debatable due to the large number of natives.
Culturally, nope. Taiwanese are culturally Taiwanese, unique, distinct and separate from the Mainland.

It is like calling Australians British because most of the population's ancestors came from Britain. Aussie culture and identities are unique and different from the British.

North Koreans too watch pirated Korean drama and TV shows, at the risk of their own lives.

Chinese content sell poorly in North Korea even at 1/6th the price of Southern content and no prosecution from the government, because Chinese content simply is not worth watching.

Korean content is that addictive.

Honestly, I have seen Korean media, and I just don't get it.
There are a few gems, but the vast majority is just mediocre at best.
90% of Korean drama and variety TV show writers are women who understand the mindset of female viewers. This is in contrast with the male-writer dominated content industry of other countries. This is the secret sauce of Korean content.

This is why the Korean content rental in Japan is bigger than Hollywood and Japanese content rentals, yet the audience is mostly women.
