The contract of the “Turkish Primary and Basic Trainer Aircraft Development Program” after being signed between the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM) and TAI, became effective on 15 March 2006. Within the framework of the program, a total of four Turkish Primary and Basic Trainer Aircraft prototypes will be designed, developed, produced and tested by TAI.The “System Requirement Review Meeting” of the program was realized in July, whereas the “Conceptual Design Evaluation Meeting” was organized at TAI’s facilities with the participation of SSM Head of Aviation Department Mr. Sedat Güldoðan and SSM representatives, on 8 December 2006. At the meeting, with the approval of the current concept, it was decided to proceed with the next level which is the “pre design activities.”Furthermore at the meeting; it was announced that the Turkish Primary and Basic Training Aircraft was named “HURKUS” after Vecihi Hurkus, who had numerous contributions in the history of Turkish Aviation.Within the framework of the Turkish Primary and Basic Training Aircraft Program, which is planned to be realized with maximum local contribution, one of TAI’s main responsibilities is to receive an airworthiness certificate from the European Aviation Safety Agency.

The Turkish Primary and Basic Training Aircraft (Hürkuş) Development Program became effective with the agreement signed between the Under secretariat for Defense Industries and TAI in March 2006.

Within the framework of the program; design, development, testing, verification, manufacturing and civil certification of an indigenous training aircraft is going to be performed. Hürkuş will be designed and certified in accordance with EASA CS 23 standard.

Hürkuş is going to have night and day mission capability, tandem seating and a single turboprop engine. With this aircraft, general purpose, instrument flight, navigation and formation training phases will be realized. In order to realize these training stages; the aircraft will have the standard aircraft systems, cabin pressurization, escape system and oxygen system.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:

Cruise Speed …………………… > 250 kts

G Limits ………………..…….. +7g / -3.5 g

Climb ……………………..15000 ft in 5 min

Seating configuration ….. Stepped tandem

Pressurization…………………………. Yes

Anti-G system…………………………. Yes

OBOGS ………………………….…….. Yes

0/0 Ejection seat ………………….……Yes

Avionics ………………………..... All digital

In HÜRKUŞ project, besides of providing many technical properties, there are studies made on human machine interface, and the relation of human with the aircraft. HÜRKUŞ will be an aircraft in which the human machine interface is provided, and pilot’s safety, comfort, usability, and maintainability requirements are satisfied.

In the aircraft, considering the anthropometric range, the smallest size pilot will be provided with a comfortable view and functional reach while the largest pilot will be able to use all controls comfortably, and will be comfortable seated in the aircraft.

There will be a 110 outside view for the front pilot, and 50 outside view for the rear pilot.

For the cockpit layout, which is still being worked on, careful consideration according to importance is given to the placement of controls and displays.

After being produced more than 40 Hurkus for Turkish Air Forces, Turkish authorities hope exporting Hurkus's for ally countries too. Hurkus will be a plane which is capable to race with last generation NATO standarts basic trainer planes such as USA PC-21 Pilatus, Brazil Embraer Super Tucano with its last generation avionic systems, engine power and many other technologies...

Production of KAI KT-1 Trainer to Top 50 Aircraft During 2009-2018.

The Turkish Air Force ordered 40 KT-1s and took options on another 15 aircraft in July 2007. These aircraft will be produced jointly by KAI and Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI). Under the terms of the contract, KAI is building the first five aircraft in Korea. Deliveries of these aircraft are scheduled to begin by the end of 2009. Forecast International projections call for the remaining 35 aircraft covered by the contract to begin rolling out of TAI's facility in 2010 and deliveries under the full 40-aircraft order to be completed by the end of 2011. This forecast assumes that Turkey will exercise its 15-aircraft option, extending deliveries into 2014. Turkey is currently the only customer for the KT-1. The South Korean Air Force has ordered a total 85 KT-1s and 20 FAC variants since 1999, but all of these aircraft have been delivered. Indonesia ordered seven KT-1s in 2001 for delivery in 2003. It later received another five aircraft and has options on the books for another eight KAI continues to develop the more advanced KT-1C, which features updated avionics and an expanded armament capability. The company has also indicated that it is at work on a new ?Enhanced Trainer? designated the XKT-1C that features a full glass cockpit and other upgrades. The primary competition for the KT-1 on the world trainer market includes Embraer's Super Tucano, the Pilatus PC-9 and PC-21, and Hawker Beechcraft's T-6. Although KAI was able to beat out the Super Tucano for the Turkish order, that competition offered little guidance as to the aircraft's future prospects because it did not need to go up against Pilatus' PC-21, which was excluded from the competition by the Turkish government because of political differences with the Swiss government. Finding another export customer is complicated by the limited experience that potential customers have with aircraft made by KAI. Unlike Embraer and Pilatus, which both have sold earlier models of trainers to many different customers around the world, KAI is a relatively new player that cannot rely on past relationships with customers to help secure new orders. Hawker Beechcraft is a third strong competitor, and its status as supplier of hundreds of new T-6 trainers to the Pentagon gives potential customers of the T-6 confidence that the development cost of future upgrades to the aircraft will be largely borne by the U.S. government. KAI thus faces very strong competition in the turboprop segment from a position of weakness. Without new orders, the line will shut down before the end of the forecast period.
