Associated Press= BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian security forces killed seven people on Tuesday as they opened fire to disperse thousands of protesters rallying against the regime on the first day of a Muslim holiday that marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, activists said.

The activists said security forces fired at protesters in the southern province of Daraa, in the central city of Homs and in Damascus and its suburbs following morning prayers on the start of Eid al-Fitr, a three -day holiday.

"Eid is when the regime goes," read a banner held up by protesters in the city of Daraa, where the uprising against President Bashar Assad's autocratic regime erupted give months ago.

Amateur videos posted by activists online showed fired up protesters calling for the downfall of the regime and execution of the president. Some called for international protection of Syrian civilians. "We are being killed every day," read another banner.

The Local Coordination Committees activist network said six protesters were killed in Daraa province and one in Homs. An activist in Daraa confirmed the six deaths in Daraa, saying four were killed in the village of al-Harra and two others in Inkhil.

The deaths in al-Harra included a 13-year-old boy, they said. "They can shoot and kill as much as they want, we will not stop calling for regime change," the activist said. He spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported heavy gunfire in the Qaboun district of the capital Damascus resulting in five injuries.

Pious Muslims traditionally visit cemeteries to pray for the dead on the first day of the Eid, and children get new clothes, shoes, haircuts and toys for the holiday.

On Tuesday, many in Syria visited graves of loved ones who have been killed in the five-month uprising against President Bashar Assad.

Human rights groups say Assad's forces have killed more than 2,000 civilians since the uprising erupted in March, touched off by the wave of revolutions sweeping the Arab world.

The government crackdown escalated dramatically at the start of Ramadan, a time of introspection and piety characterized by a dawn-to-dusk fast. Muslims typically gather in mosques during the month for special nightly prayers after breaking the fast, and the Assad government used deadly force to prevent such large gatherings from turning into more anti-government protests.

The LCC activist network said Syrians were keeping their Eid celebrations to a minimum this year in solidarity with the Syrians who have died and the families of detainees.

"There will be no happiness while the martyrs' blood is still warm," it said in a statement Tuesday.

The Syrian government has placed severe restrictions on the media and expelled foreign reporters, making it nearly impossible to independently verify witness accounts.

Time to Assad - move over and give Syria a chance

where are U.S & NATO forces now. bloody hypocrites
Why is it the responsibility of US and NATO ? Don't the 1.2 billion strong Muslim world have a voice ? Don't they have sympathy towards the cause of the innocent Syrians ? Shouldn't they take a united stand to overthrow the Syrian government ? For the past few days over and over and over again i have been reading schaudenfraude-laden articles on the endgame for the US, the US Bankruptcy, the American economy in doldrums with people surviving on foodstamps by some immature people in this forum, when the shrillest voice should be against such oppression carried out in Syria. Let me see and hear that voice resonate in this forum. Let all people devoted to humanity led by brotherhood of muslims support the movement to overthrow this oppressive government. Until that happens, i simply think that such immature posters should just keep their American hegemony tomfoolery concerns to themselves.

The Arab states have an agreement that they won't invade each other's country. Saddam dishonored that treaty.

That is why the Arabs cannot militarily interfere in Syria. But they have however taken diplomatic actions. The only few countries that can have a direct impact in preventing the tragedy going on in Syria are Iran, Turkey and the USA.

I am not going to go into the Iraq war as it has been done and dusted many a time. Let us take Libya first. The UNSC resolution 1973 proposed a no-fly zone and accordingly " authorized all necessary means to protect civilians and civilian-populated areas, except for a "foreign occupation force"". The UNSC resolution to impose an embargo on Syria similarly was vetoed by China and Russia. Get China and Russia to support the resolution, and you will see similar support for the Syrian opposition too from NATO. Secondly, NATO is not the default global policeman that it should be hankered after. The Arab states have a responsibility too to protect their fellow Arabs from all forms of ill-treatment, both from fellow Muslims and from Non-Muslims. It is only when such voices are muffled and such apathy observed, that NATO decides to intervene.

Well that is untrue ; Syria had intervened when Lebanon had its civil strife going on in the country ( Link). Lebanon might as well return the favor to them.

I don't care too much for what they have agreed. Times and people change. As Muslims this is not what we are about. This violence can no longer be tolerated and the world is watching the fellow Arabs sit like pets watching at the sidelines. Either they should get together and have a voice because people low of you. Especially on eid they should have the heart to speak up and help stop people dying.

Charter of the Arab League - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Saudi in this very forum confirmed that.

Whatever happened in Lebanon is a different and a more complicated matter, which was also related to Israel.
In that case, it is outright intolerance and a callous attitude towards the fundamental rights for the people, don't you agree ? Monarchies intervening inside other monarchies by suppressing the free voices of the people as in the case of the Saudis helping Bahrain, is nothing but a blatant violation of people's rights, especially when they are Muslims. Shouldn't you be condemning such violence ?

I do condemn the senseless violence in Syria. I was just stating the written agreements the Arabs had with one another.

I do agree with both of these posts. I don't know why the Arabs don't want to be players. They just let the Americans, Israelis, or even Iranians do the playing.

It is despicable that the Assad regime has no respect for human life and rights on Ramadan and even Eid. And yet the Iranian regime condemns the 'Zionist regime', dumb good for nothing Saudi Wahabis, Uncle Sam the Boogy-man, etc. Hypocrites.

The problem with Syria is that its armed forces are recruited from a small elite minority that is afraid of the majority; in such a situation, the armed forces have no problem shooting civilians.

India's armed forces are disproportionately Hindu. Watch out Muslims and Sikhs.

Gaddafi had no real allies; Syria does Iran and Russia (to some extent)

Syrian army is highly trained as you mentioned with experiences in Lebanon recent years.

As long as it’s not affecting their country Arab leaders would sit on the side lines and play tennis

How quick Saudi Arabia was to sending its soldiers in to Bahrain to quell the unrest there

Syria on other hand is not close to major Arab countries thus they have very little influence there compared to Iran

Syria has learned that unlike Iraq and Libya who were anti-western but isolated in the Arab world, they will need alliances to keep their house safe from intruders hence Iran comes in good shape

Btw I condemn the atrocities inflicted on the Syrian people by the Syrian Arab republic …………

peace

Assalam alaikum

This criminal bashar is like is father, killing ppl on eid and when they fire they target upper body.

Arab countries don't have any power to pressure syria but let them open the borders and u will see thousands coming in ( coz it is too much watching even kids getting killed by these criminals ) and then u will call them terrorists.

What i demand is giving protection to syrians , give them political backing of international community and arm them if they can't interfere

what i know is the syrians have decided they will not let these criminals rule them any more and they r prepared to sacrifice their lives for their coming generations

LANAT ON BASAHAR AND HIS FATHER
