Russian arms dealer sends missile defence systems to Syria

Almost a week ago, comments made by the Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, suggested a weakening in Moscow's backing of Syria's president, Bashar al-Assad. He said that Russia would no longer stand in the way of a departure of the president.

"If Syrians agree between each other, we will only be happy to support such a solution," he said. However, he still insisted that it was "unacceptable" for any conditions of departure to come from outside the country.

Russia has continued to supply arms to Syria, including recent reports that it is preparing to send an amphibious landing vessel and security staff for military installations, although it claims that these have been for the purposes of defence and not the regime's civil campaign.

No war between Syria/Turkey. Assad must leave immediately to solve the situation, did Syrian get it?

“We believe that nobody has the right to decide for other nations who should be in power and who should not,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday after a G20 summit in Mexico.

What Russia is saying, no other country have no right to decide for them, which is absolutely correct. Russia say it is internal matters and the decision of Syrians to change regime or not. US can't do anything else after Libyan experiences which led to worst situations.

The plane was 1 km inside Syrian territory, and there were no warnings nor escorts from Syrian side. Alot of countries violates their neighbors territories but when they are warned they back up, it's unusual to shoot down a plane without a warning. That's an act of war.

Turkey should rain bombs on Assad's palace during this night as an answer to this.

Another Syrian pilot escaped to Jordan for asylum yesterday, landed in Jordan.

Meanwhile, a Syrian air force pilot defected to Jordan on Thursday, landing his MiG-21 jet fighter at a military airbase and asking for political asylum, Jordanian officials said.

The defection is first involving an aircraft since the start of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad although thousands of soldiers have deserted from the Syrian army, whose ranks are mostly filled by members of the Sunni Muslim majority.

“He (the pilot) requested political asylum in Jordan. He is being debriefed at the moment,” Jordanian Minister of State for Information Samih al-Maaytah told Reuters.

Russia Arms Syria With Missiles To Defend Against NATO Attack

We now know what those six Russian warships that reportedly entered Syrian territorial waters last week were carrying. Aside from representing a show of strength to discourage NATO powers from launching a military attack, on board were Russian technical experts ready to help Damascus set up a sophisticated missile defense system sold to them by Moscow.

“Russian warships that have reached waters off Syria in recent days were carrying, among other things, Russian technical advisors who will help the Syrians set up an array of S-300 missiles Damascus has received in recent weeks, a report in the London-based Arabic language Al Quds-Al Arabi said Thursday. Citing sources in Syria and Russia, the paper said that Moscow sees a Western attack on Syria as a “red line” that it will not tolerate,” reports Arutz Sheva.

The S-300 missiles, which according to the report will be used to “deflect a possible attack by NATO or the U.S. and EU,” are long range surface-to-air missiles developed by Russia in 1979 for the purpose of protecting large industrial and military bases from enemy attack aircraft and cruise missiles.

“Along with the missiles, the report says that Russia has installed advanced radar systems in all key Syrian military and industrial installations. The radar system also covers areas north and south of Syria, where it will be able to detect movement of troops or aircraft towards the Syrian border. The radar targets include much of Israel, as well as the Incirlik military base in Turkey, which is used by NATO,” states the report.

Military Spokesman: Anti-Air Defenses Intercepted a Target That Violated Syrian Airspace Over Territorial Waters, Shot It Down West of Lattakia

DAMASCUS, (SANA) – A military spokesman issued the following statement: At 11:40 AM on 22/6/2012, an unidentified aerial target violated Syrian airspace, coming from the west at a very low altitude and at high speed over territorial waters, so the Syrian anti-air defenses counteracted with anti-aircraft artillery, hitting it directly as it was 1 kilometer away from land, causing it to crash into Syrian territorial waters west of Om al-Tuyour village in Lattakia province, 10 kilometers from the beach.

The spokesman added that the target turned out to be a Turkish military plane that entered Syrian airspace and was dealt with according to laws observed in such cases.

The spokesman also said that the two countries' naval forces' commands have established contact, and Syrian naval ships along with the Turkish side are searching for the two missing pilots.
