'Super Sukhoi' Purchase Likely During Putin's India Visit

Sep 27, 2012 14:51 CET

Just months after India rejected Russia’s aircraft pitch in the multi-billion dollar MMRCA program; the two countries are expected to sign a new deal for the supply of 40 Su-30MKI fighter aircraft, upgraded to the ‘Super Sukhoi’ configuration later this year.

An announcement could be made during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s state visit to New Delhi in November, sources told defenseworld.net.

India is looking to procure ‘Super Sukhois’, the latest version of the aircraft which will have a new cockpit, state-of-the-art radar with stealth features besides being able to carry a heavier weapons load including the air-launched version of the Brahmos cruise missile.

With the latest order, India’s fleet of Sukhoi’s will reach a strength of 270 aircraft. With the MMRCA deal with winner Dassault still under negotiations, India plans to phase out 120 MiG 21s, making the Su-30MKIs the leading fighter aircraft for the IAF. The new ‘super Sukhoi’ deal is estimated to be worth $3.77 billion with the first delivery expected during 2014-15.

India is relying on the air superiority role of the Sukhoi-30MKI aircraft to take on a variety of threats in the region including Chinese and Pakistani ground-attack aircraft such as Pakistani F-16s and the Chinese J-10 jets.

It is increasing the deployment of Sukhois in forward bases. Recently, the Indian Air Force located a squadron of SU-30MKIs to a forward base near the India-Pakistan border to replace an earlier squadron of MiG-23 Jets.

India has first begun buying off-the-shelf Su-30s from Russia in 1997. But, in 2000, began developing Sukhoi Su-30MKIs at home after Hindustan Aeronautics Limited began production under license from Sukhoi Design Bureau. The Su-30MKI has considerable Indian components in it.

But i thought the deal was already signed earlier for a total of 272 su-30s of them 40 to be turned to super sukhois??

I can't wait to find out the configuration of this super sukhoi.
Which radar will it use?? how much rcs will be reduced?? are we getting new, more powerful engines with 3d tvc??are we getting new bvr missiles - the rvv sd maybe in place of the rvv ae??

Though i am in favor of increasing the no. of sukhois especially super sukhois but i don't think Putin's visit to India should be a rewarding one for Russia, instead India should show it's anger to Russia for another delay in INS Viky.

In another thread I was saying same thing but nobody listened(no of squadrons of sukhoi jets thread). these 40 Super Sukhois will replace first lot of 40 Sukhois which India purchased in start of Sukhoi series induction. So it will be 270 jets + 2 jets to compensate for earlier losses.

It will have much better airframe, stealth optimized(not fully),RCS will heavily come down, Zhuk AE AESA radar, next generation avionics, next gen missiles(MBDA missiles added,MICA,Storm Shadow).
Su 30 MKI has already 3d TVC. Engines are more than enough, they only need to be tweaked as per requirement.

SU 30 MKI on steroids!!! I get the picture.

No, so far we have made the deal to procure 40 + 2 (replacements) additional fighter, but the Super 30 upgrade is still not fully decided. We only have several rumors about what the upgrade will contain, but not even which radar it will get is for sure yet.

i thought sukhoi numbers will be well above 300 by adding these 40

50 + 140 + 40 - 3 = 227 + 42 = 269 (after the deal of 40 + 2 was fixed, we lost another MKI, it's possible that IAF wants to replace that as well)

That's speculation buddy, radar can be Zhuk AE, or BARS AESA, missiles initially planned were ASTRA, RCS reduction includes composites and RAM and not stealth features, besides Bhramos and possibly newer versions of R77 / Astra, I think Sudharshan LGB will be integrated as well.

Am looking foreward to seeing the new upgraded cockpit for the SUPER MKI, I am told it shouldn't be too different from the Su-35's:
