Su-33 fighter jet crashes from Russia’s Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier

The pilot ejected from the plane and was rescued unharmed, the statement said.

“Naval aviation sorties are continuing in accordance with their tasks,” the ministry added.

The Su-33 is the second aircraft that has been lost from the Kuznetsov fleet during its ongoing mission in the Mediterranean. Earlier, a Mig-29 fighter jet was not able to land and ran out of fuel because the deck crew of the carrier failed to fix a broken arrestor gear.

The deployment of the Admiral Kuznetsov to Syria is its first combat mission since the ship was built. It is the only aircraft carrier currently in service in the Russian Navy.

You know the reason why CV-16 Liaoning is only declared as training ship? It is to get our PLAN crew as much experience first hand as possible when operating on the second carrier.

Of cos, it's easy to talk when you have load of cash to burn and spare a carrier as training and building another one quickly. But fact is, the Russian carrier state is not very good and preparation is not enough.

They shall consider using Tu-26 blackjack as the main strike component rather than carriers.

Why did Russia even send their sole old rust aircraft carrier there for? They already have a military air base in Syria and Iran often allows them access their soil for refuelling their aircrafts for strikes in Syria. So why did they send this old carrier in Syria for?

I think it suppose to be a psychological move but maybe it turns the opposite. If Russia loses another plane on the carrier. It will be a complete disaster.

To be honest, Russia has have had a military doctrine of operating aircraft carrier for airborne operations in an intensive conflict like the U.S, U.K, (or Japan prior to the end of WWII ) did. Russian military doctrine has always been different from relying on carriers for this.

They lack money. Just look at the equipment they use, and how much their budget is. It's abysmal, and what's more, they are set to tighten their budget even further to 36 billion USD.
