Strategies/Tactics of Pakistani Military

That was my whole point. The Bengalis saw the writing on the wall and walked.

looking at a long term policy, for the betterment of nation, isn't it the responsibility if pak military as it has taken upon itself the task of nation building to end this nexus situation which has nothing but harmed the national interest of pakistan in last 65 years.

Academically, yes, but how do you propose they do that? A military coup? You know how everybody would howl about Pak military acting against 'democracy' -- especially the Pakistani liberals who foam at the mouth at any mention of army but give a convenient pass to the feudals. Pakistan's enemies, at home and abroad, would make sure the feudals get reinstated.

The charade of democracy is the best shield for the feudals, which is why Imran Khan is welcomed. He may or may not deliver, but there's really no other option to change the system.

Anyway, getting a bit off-topic from the subject of military tactics, I suppose...

No prize for guessing article author.

"Asif Haroon Raja is a retired Brigadier from Pakistan Army and author of several books. He is an analyst on security and political matters."
'Analyst on security and political matters'? :woot:  Like Zaid Hamid and Co? Why do goofs write such baloney? Just because they have reached some exalted rank in the Army, they think they are in the same league as Clausewitz and Liddell Hart! Jeeez! These yahoos should go back to farming! :P

Of course it is swaying from subject, but in the view of pakistan military, its political actions and it's effect on it's strategic front constitutes it to be discussed in legit scope of topic at hand, I dont think moderators would mind any constructive discussion on the thread.

Ordinance on land reform, anti-corruption during years of military rule. Enforcement on stricter gun laws in NWFP, FATA. Commissioning licensing of religious teachers at madrasas to prescribe to certain syllabus, monitoring and registering religious aid groups would have been very productive by the military.

The laws would either be blocked by the feudal-dominated parliament, or they would become ghost laws (on the books but not enforced) when the feudals returned to power. Many things improved during Musharraf's rule, but it all went backwards as soon as Zardari came to town. The changes are not permanent, and will never be, as long as the feudals remain powerful.

I am not even sure the military wants to mess with the feudals anyway: the current arrangement seems to suit them just fine. I am sure there are patriotic elements within the military who would like to change things, but like I wrote, the military will be vilified it it does anything against 'democracy'.

The final factor, of course, is the population. The feudals have given a tasty carrot to the masses: a tax holiday. Don't rock the boat and you can keep cheating on taxes. No taxes, no services, life goes on...

Probably the only Pakistanis who pay proper tax are employees of corporations.
