Reacting strongly to the killing of an Indian fisherman in firing by the Sri Lankan Navy, India on Thursday said such incidents have no "justification" and called on the authorities there to "desist" from use of force.

In a fresh incident of attack on Tamil Nadu fishermen in Palk Strait, one person was killed when Sri Lankan Navy allegedly opened fire on three fishermen, who put out to sea from Jagadapattinnam near Pudukottai yesterday.

"We have received reports of the death of an Indian fisherman due to firing by Sri Lankan Navy personnel. Our High Commissioner in Colombo has immediately taken up this matter with the Sri Lankan Government and expressed our deep concern and regret at this incident.

"We have emphasised that resort to firing in these situations has no justification and called on the Sri Lankan authorities to desist from use of force," a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs said here.

This has been going on for a long time,The SR Navy patrols those waters very aggressively on the grounds of preventing any arms smuggling from India.

Now that LTTE has died down,i see no reason to continue this.

In the midst of international media reports regarding the alleged shooting of two fishermen by the Sri Lanka Navy in the waters near Tamil Nadu today, the SL Navy Spokesman Captain Athula Senarath has categorically denied the incident all together stating that no such shooting has been reported.

Indian media reported that one fisherman was killed in the shooting and that another was injured while Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has sought the Indian Prime Ministers intervention in the matter.

India takes up shooting incident with SL govt

New Delhi: The Central Government has taken up the matter of firing at Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan navy strongly with Sri Lankan government through the Indian High Commission in Colombo. Ministry of External Affairs also summoned Sri Lankan High Commissioner Prasad Kariyawasam to South Block and asked for an explanation on the shooting incident.
India emphasised that firing in such situations has no justification and has called on the Sri Lankan authorities to desist from use of force.
India has asked Sri Lanka to adhere to the October 2008 understanding reached between the two governments and called on the Sri Lankan Navy to exercise maximum restraint and avoid use of force in such situations.

DMK took up the matter with the Centre and demanded strong action.

However, Sri Lankan navy has denied that they had fired and said they were assisting the fishermen to return into Indian waters.

AIADMK has slammed the Tamil Nadu government for not taking enough steps to stop the atrocities against fishermen and said the matter should have been taken up at the highest level when Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapakse visited India.

"We should take strong action. Rajapakse came here and there was an absolute silence. What are we doing?" asks AIADMK MLA Badar Saeed.

The Sri Lankan navy on Wednesday opened fire on Indian fishermen in the Indian Ocean killing one and critically injuring another.

The firing reportedly occurred as the Lankans believed the Indians were trespassing. But it is not clear whether the fisherman were in Indian territorial waters or in Lanka's.

srilankan navy has shot the fishermen- 1 killed and another seriouly injured
this aggressive stand has been staying even after LTTE's demolition and cannot in any way be continued.
GOI needs to take the issue in a strong manner not under political pressure from DMK.

Maritime boundaries are not hard-demarcated and it is tough for the fishermen to gauge, they go by rule of approximation as to how far they have come from land.

Whereas, land borders and that too fenced ones are tough to miss unless someone is trying to cross intentionally.

oh mahatma ji,

these so called fishermen are mostly doign illegal acts like - sending drugs to lanka, smuggling , some time even distribute the weapon for ltte.

lanka had hard time for years now they have peace and if some evil in the dress of fishermen try to go to lanka its not right.

if it come to infiltrating

lanka must warn first ask them to retreat or go back.

if they dont listen - they have all the right to shoot them for their national security.......

these guys can go to lnaka throguh legal chanel .
