The fact that the exercise takes place in mountainous terrain could be an indication that Russia is interested in learning from Pakistan’s military counterinsurgency (COIN) operations. Given the latter’s extensive experience in battling insurgents and Russia’s growing role in the Syrian Civil War, this could very possibly be the case. Russia could also use the exercise to showcase some of its military hardware useful for Pakistani COIN operations, including combat aircraft and infantry weapons.

Southern MD servicemen will take part in the Russian-Pakistani tactical exercise “Friendship-2016 for the first time. The training activities will take place on September 23 – October 10 on the territory of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in mountainous region.

The military servicemen will exchange experiences and practice interaction while performing combat training tasks in the mountains, in particular, during fighting against conventional illegal armed groups.

I am really surprised by the way Indian posters are reacting to such incidents...Why there is so much of desperations...I mean, if we can make a deal with USA why can not Russia can not deal with Pakistan....I mean come on guys, come to world of reality...These posts from Indian posters looking for some excuse from Russia about its military exercise with Pakistan is not expected.

I have already said it's first time for Pakistan having drill with Russia & very good win for Pakistan.
But believe me after two months when Putin will be visiting India most of these will be forgotten..

Good.So all mentions to Gilgit has been deleted. while The first press release by Russian military mentioned Gilgit range, looks like they edited it out after it turned that the exercise won't be held in Gilgit.

TASS also did the same thing, they edited out Gilgit from their press article after the statement confirmed the exercise won't be held in Gilgit.

I'm finding sites, some say Rattu some dont...Perhaps someone who is or who knows someone in the Army can assist in this wild goose chase...
