Starfighter The Fighter The Enemy Dreaded

The F-104 provided a big moral boost to the PAF in the 60s and caused the enemy to dread to its core. Sure enough, it was a top-of-the-line, high performance aircraft, but it had certain limitations.

The F-104 was a ‘senior’ aircraft. Only the top pilots got the honor of flying it (much like the PAF F-16s today).

The F-104 has had many honors to its name, including the famous low-level sonic boom over Amritsar by Flight Lieutenant (later Air Marshal) Farooq Umar.

The F-104 Starfighter is still remembered as one of the PAF’s best-performing and most-loved machines. It provided the PAF of the 1960s the prestige and thrill that comes with operating a top-of-the line aircraft, which the Starfighter was.:pakistan:

I believe it sacred of an attacking IAF formation and in the same process Pakistan managed to capture a GNAT flown by Sq.Ld. Brij Pal Singh Sikand. I think Sikand himself was leading the formation and as soon as he saw the F-104 he said 'Oay Starfighter, bhajo' (something along those lines). After breaking off from the formation he lost the sense of direction and landed on an abandoned airfield, thinking it was India. Only to later find it was Pakistan. His GNAT is placed in the PAF museum. If I am not mistaken the very pilot who was flying F-104 that day flew the IAF GNAT back to air base, as he had experience on the aircraft previously. Probably flew in the UK or something.

The Gnat was forced down by F/L Hakimullah (later ACM Hakimullah). The Gnat was flown from Pasrur by F/l Saad Hatmi (later A/cdre) to Sargodha.

Thanks for the correction. Guess I heard the story wrong or got the facts mixed up. It was very long time ago. Don't even remember the source. In any case, F/L Hakimullah was flying F-104 wasn't he?

They are fearing our Jf17s much more, now that we be equipped them with self jamming pods and Aesa Radars. Not to mention PL15

I think political affiliations should not be made topic or content of posts, on the Air Force Forum.
