Sri Lanka to remove race, religion and marital status of parents from birth certificates

.
Not disputing that Sri Lankans of all backgrounds are a mixture but given the background of recent ethno nationalist turn especially since the current govt took power on that particular agenda, There's reason to be apprehensive.. Sri Lankan national identity must and need to be encouraged but not at the risk of the minority identities and certainly not to the current narrative of Sri Lankan equates to Sinhala Buddhist identity
I don't think there's a Sinhala "Buddhist" identity. Religion is overplayed and Christian Sinhalese people are not considered as aliens at all. I honestly don't understand the obsession with religion in SL but I think eventually it should go down and religion should become irrelevant. However I also think that minorities should be eventually absorbed into the Sinhalese eventually as it happened over centuries. No matter what the younger generations are becoming less and less religious anyway.

. . .
I am “Sinhala Buddhist” but i dont think i am special when i go to SL

You may choose not to, Good on you but that's not how it's been used by politicians mainly in the ruling party, monks and others with vested interests in Sri Lanka

Not even 24 hours gone since the announcement and this from a powerful minister close to the president

Btw i just learnt that religion was never mentioned in the birth certificate to begin with, Only the ethnicity and marital status of the parents

@Godman

I do not understand what you mean by marital status of parents.

Regardless of whether the parents are married or not at the time of birth, the child automatically gets the father's family name is it not?

Law is obviously not my subject, but I don't think we have that. I don't even recall seeing religion in a single government document for that matter.

Cheers, Doc

In some country marital status is important, example here in Malaysia, for the Muslims if the parents are not married, the child's last name has to be "Abdullah" by law and not the un-married father's name. This was a national news few months ago.

That's really interesting.

So the child out of wedlock does not have any rights from the father?

Yes, I think that is the case. I wonder other Muslim countries have the same law.

Though in SL's case, prevention of discrimination against the child at multiple venues (school/employment/social circles etc.) could be the main aim rather than religion as Muslim constituted around 9.7% of its demographics.

I know Sri Lanka went through a very unique process of "internalizing/mainstreaming" Tamil kids after the war ended.

Maybe this is a continuation of that state policy.

Best regards,

I dont think it happens that way, I'm not so insightful on Sri Lankan law, But as the OP states kids have had trouble enrolling in to schools etc due to this clause

COLOMBO, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan authorities on Wednesday announced that all new birth certificates which will be issued for new born children in the future will not mention any race or religion or the marital status of the parents.

Registrar General of the Registrar General's Department, N. C. Vithanage told local media that all details pertaining to marriage, ethnic group and religion will be removed from the application form for the registration of a birth in Sri Lanka although this was mandatory earlier.

Local media reports said that this decision was taken after many children in the country were reportedly facing issues due to the details of the marriage of parents, especially when enrolling a child in school.

Under the new system, a 12-digit serial number is to be issued for all new birth certificates and this serial number can be used to obtain a national identity card when a child completes 15 years of age, Vithanage said.

The new digital birth certificate will come with a QR code, a bar code and a dedicated watermark to meet international standards to counter forged documents. Enditem

Is this Srilankas own decision, or some money lender pushed you guys.
I mean this move seems very interesting, sudden and to be honest, seems like out of no where..

I think it's the government's decision to remove ethnic politics, minority parties etc. If you go to north for instance, it's a disaster. They still practice caste system there and politicians rely on ethnic votes to stay in power and oppress the same people who vote them. I think it's a good decision because Sri Lanka has a problem with segregation but I think it needs to crush all religions, ethnic bs equally and bring everyone under one identity.

Well you need to promote national identity but not by crushing ethnic identities, If not it's fascism

Religious identity is a misnomer i agree, Religion should not have any role in public sphere at all

seems like out of no where

Well as far as i know only the birth certificate mentions those clauses.. ID's, Driving licenses and passports only mention the nationality
