What confuses me, is why would they hit the Christians first, I thought their beef was with the Sri Lankan Buddhists to begin with.

Because, it was not "them", who hit Christians. It's Indian secret service at work.

First India tried to twist the arm of Srilanka through Tamil insurgency. It failed miserably.
Now they are trying to program Srilanka anti Muslim, so that its Pakistani support may be taken away.
