Real buddhists can be anyone but the dalit political groups which use Buddhism for politics. There are much more pressing issues for the dalit leaders to deal with than involving in religious politics.

In Southeastern part of Bangladesh, Chittagong, we have two groups of Buddhist, one is Tibeto Burman looking Chakma-Tanchangya and then there is Bengali Barua's, many of whom I have worked with and were good friends of mine. Do you know anything about Barua's and their origin?

Adi sankararcharya along with many saints saiver, upper, bought about the change....
Heard about the famous story of pallava king who had converted to jainism, suffered with stomach pain?
Saiver asked to pray to shiva, on which immediately the pains stopped...
They bought about the change in hinduism, and these saints didnt believe in caste systems...
Adi sankararcharya travelled all over india, and won various debates with buddhist and jainist scholars, which eventually nailed the end of buddhism...
And when cholas came to power, buddhism was complete...

And in no meaning, buddhist never followed strict religious procedures in india...
They followed it, along with local hindu cultures and festivals... So when Bhakti movement started, buddhism was complete, and suring the cholas buddhism was over...
Even sufi islam growed that way in the sub continent...
