Sri Lanka approves construction on stalled Chinese port project

The general Chinese exuberance against India in this thread is quite amusing. Colombo port city project, a purely non-military one which in no way threatened India's regional security interests, was cancelled by the present government for corruption charges and environmental concerns and has been given a go ahead by the present government for they might have found no objection in it. The Indian establishment was in no way influential in halting the deal, neither they had anything to do with the consequent Sri Lankan decision. Sri Lankans will do whatever suits there national interest; Indians do not live in the 80's anymore.

Do not live in the 80s? Not according to your GDP per capita. lol joking.

But seriously who started this? You really think it was a Chinese that started by saying ha, even though nobody said anything, I will say Sri Lanka will not stop the construction of these ports, EVEN though nobody said they would.

You really think that's what happened.

Indian media and PDF Indian to the least are not official spokesperson of India.

well, neither are the Chinese members officials of Chinese government, so we got to discuss something, we can only induct so many ships a month, so here we are.

You're going to resupply your nuke subs in a Port City????:lol:

Kid both are different projects... as for this news there's no confirmation, no other source is reporting this huge news including chinese sites. if its real then good for China.. this project is purely civilian use so no threat for india, as for the nuke subs docking in Sri lanka , it not going to happen till the current government stays in power

Do you understand the point of a nuke sub? Purely civilian? Yes, except there is a piece of land there that belongs to China now for the next 50-100 years, too many treaties forgot which one this is.

We don't have to resupply a nuke sub, our sub can stay underwater for close to half a year, that visit was just that, a visit.

oh, Honey calm down... i was quoting to the guy who totally miss understood the events??? the port city project is a civilian one not for military purpose, he mixed that with hambantota port where Chinese were not allowed to dock their subs anymore (till new government is in power)..

of course, Nuke subs don't need to make a port in Sri lanka, but what china did was to send a message to India, well we've replied you back for that.. even your naval ships docking there wuld still be a question mark!!!

Can't see that quote, cause I ignore a lot. We'll see, but the PLAN chief did say Submarines will from now on be part of the anti piracy missions in the Gulf of Eden, we'll see how that works out.

Our ships also docked in the UK is that a message to the French? Not everything's about India dude. If we want to sent a message, we'll text.

As to naval ships docking, we'll see. Hard for me to say either way, and I'm not even sure if docking there on missions was a thing before this.

Now our nuclear submarines can resupply on their Indian Ocean patrols to help Sri Lanka and Maldives take down the elephant!

resupply in srilanka and maldives
:rofl::rofl::rofl::nono::nono::nono:
do you know india saved maldives from LTTE when they would have almost taken it over, they drink indian water if indians stand at the shore and piss in the direction of maldives they will washaway in a piss tsunami, and srilanka helping the chinese to replenish their submarines with coconut water and chocolates, if this is their reply to India only to create trouble then India should keep all options open, and remember 70 million people in India are waiting like hungry beasts, and srilanka should know that you won the war because India supported you, Indian govt never spoke about the war in public, they could have made a ruckus about it,

Can't see that quote, cause I ignore a lot. We'll see, but the PLAN chief did say Submarines will from now on be part of the anti piracy missions in the Gulf of Eden, we'll see how that works out.

and India should seriously think of patrolling the south china sea along with the Americans and Japanese navies and routinely dock at Vietnamese,Philippines and Japanese ports for replenishment

As you should, piracy is a serious issue, and port calls are important for peace and understanding. India should also be part in a major way of the 7 trillion dollar infrastructure game and invest in South East Asia.

Increasing trade and military engagement is a win win.

Unfortunately, the immediate interpretation of the entire issue in this forum in general was quite premature, erroneous and misguided by unbound sense of super nationalism. The Chinese attempt to secure a trade route through Indian ocean do ring some alarm in India but regarding Colombo city project the reaction by Indians was disappointing. Undue credit was ascribed to prime minister who though far better performer than his predecessor in foreign diplomacy had nothing to do with it. So, when the project was again given clearance it appeared as a facepalm to them here. Fact is the Chinese has the capacity to invest a vast amount of capital and implement projects in much more rapidity than the Indians and sadly there are not many to buy this truth.

.
You see the indian brag about how modi has managed to drive Chinese out a month ago and make Sri lanka a sphere of influence. Now the project is back, that means modi fail again?
So constructing a breakwater has changed the geopolitical scenario? You gotta be joking right?

Do you even know WTF a breakwater is? It is constructed to protect an anchorage from the effects of both weather and longshore drift. Like this one...

So this is no big deal. Don't break into a dragon dance for bagging this piddly project. It's less than peanuts.

And there is something about a airspace control issue. China says that it will control the airspace over this project. I am not certain about this. Please could someone in the know clarify this please. Thanks in advance.

Presence of China in Indian Ocean

There are no reports of strategic military bases in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Myanmar being built by China. However, Government is aware of Chinese involvement in commercial infrastructural projects such as port development, construction of Oil and Gas Pipeline and building of highways in these countries.

Government keeps a constant watch on all developments concerning our national security and commercial interests and takes all necessary measures to safeguard them in accordance with the prevailing security and strategic considerations. Capability enhancement and capability creation through modernization and acquisition of new assets is an ongoing process.

This information was given by Defence Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar in a written reply to Shri Ninong Ering in Lok Sabha today.

Modi insisted Sri Lankans follow 13A. Now Sri Lanka responds to Modi with a slap on the face. Soon Sri Lanka will be like Pakistan. A Buddhist Pakistan. Solid alliance to encircle India from all side. Next we need Nepal.

Sri Lankans call for US $ 1.4b Chinese project to continue - Xinhua | English.news.cn

COLOMBO, March 24 (Xinhua)-- Ahead of Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena's first visit to China a local organisation called for China's largest investment project to resume, an official said on Tuesday.

The Sri Lanka-China Social Cultural Cooperation Association told reporters the 1.4 billion U.S dollar port city project should not have been suspended. They also called on the government to engage more productively with Chinese stakeholders in Sri Lanka.

"We must be mindful of the fact that this suspension could hurt the investment and diplomatic relations between the two countries. We urge President Sirisena to resolve any concerns over this project during his visit," association president I. Abeysekera said.

The project, which is the largest foreign investment deal in Sri Lanka, was suspended by the new government that was elected in January over environmental concerns, which the Chinese company has denied.

The local government is also concerned over the Chinese company owning about 100 hectares of the 233 hectares to be reclaimed from the sea for the project.

Following the suspension China Communications Construction Company Limited has submitted relevant environmental documents to a committee appointed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The daily loss for the suspension has been estimated at 380,000 U.S dollars by the company.

President Sirisena who will be in China on Thursday is expected to hold talks with top Chinese government officials on a range of topics including the port city project.

Since the end of a three decade conflict in 2009 China became the country's largest loan provider with an estimated 5 billion U. S dollars mostly for massive infastructure development.

-4 Indian naval ships in SL at this moment

-Indian Gov opening language facilities in
