That basically shows the SPECIAL status the Earth has in the universe and this very concept of speciality does not go down well with a lot ungrateful bast*** engaged in scientific research and wasting our money instead of focusing on protecting the Earth from our own harmful actions.

Protecting earth from our harmful actions will prolong the continuation of our species for a short period of time("short" in space history timeline).....the Sun will not hold on forever and no matter how clean and shiny we keep earth we do not have any other option than to become a multi galactic species to ensure our continuation....and that starts out by first exploring other planets in our solar system and colonizing them...and gradually moving on to other star systems. We HAVE to find ways to leave this planet....because we can invest money and keep it habitable for another week....but we also have to think about next month.
And that won't happen at any point of time even in a millions years (if we survive that long)
You would not leave all your property for poor kids in Africa over your own children and grandchildren....any money spent on space exploration is money well spent.
Our galaxy will survive well over that(at least 4 billion years to go)....even if we are extremely conservative we have 3 billion years to figure out how to leave this galaxy.....I recon we can and we will do it.
The galaxy will survive much longer than but the Sun will survive another 5 billion years but that does not mean life on Earth will survive that far in the future. Do you know that the distance between the galaxies is increasing at a very high speed? Human race will end much earlier than that...just think that the end is much closer than the start of the human life.
Oh come on...what do you recon is gonna kill us? I can think of two things Climate change or Nuclear warfare....Most nations have already made critical advancements in combating and adapting to climate change....and unless you fear an eminent Nuclear war I don't think that the end is that near.
A direct hit by large rock (astroid) or comet is a possibility, a nuclear war, a gamma ray burst directly hitting the Earth and stripping off the atmospheric layer at least the Ozone, the Earth's core may reverse the direction, The Sun much before its death will start growing in the size (actually today's Sun is much larger in size than a few billion years ago) and both Venus and Mercury will fall into and the Earth will become too hot for life.
