China fought a war with Japan which was only contained to east part of China, central and western China was unaffected, but Korea was colonized by Japan for 50 years, the whole country was loss to the invaders.

The Annexation of Korea happened when Japan was British Ally, so everything 'hunky-dory' to Imperialist Westerners. And the carving up of Chinese ports happened with European Imperialists. The common enemy of East Asia is Western.

When the Japanese treated Asia how Europe treats the world, then Japan became big bad guy. Ask China how the Opium Wars were and if they trust the British Imperialists. Japan was little bully like their masters in London. When the Japanese British Alliance ended, Japan still acted British. The West forces Japan to open up, they do, and behave Western, then are the 'bad guys' for their rapid rise in Asia.
