The deputy director of China’s lunar exploration program, Wu Yanhua, said during a press conference on Dec. 17 that most of the samples collected by the Chang’e 5 mission will be stored at the National Astronomical Observatories in Beijing. He added that an unspecified amount would be sent to Shaoshan, the birthplace of Mao Zedong in the central Hunan province, as a “remote disaster backup site”.

The decision was apparently motivated by a line in one of Chairman Mao's poems: “clasp the moon in the Ninth Heaven / 可上九天揽月.”

I think the rocks collected by our manned submersible on the floor of the Mariana Trench last month (Nov. 2020) should also be stored in Shaoshan; Chairman Mao, in the same poem, also said: seize turtles deep down in the Five Seas / 可下五洋捉鳖

Chairman Mao guided the build-up of new China, formed its sovereignty DNA, visioned the establishment of early critical heavy industries, liberated the poor and pioneered a literacy revolution. Most important, he made sure that China would acquire nuclear weapons tech as early as possible.

This is definitely an appropriate tribute.

.
Perhaps placing a few samples from both the Moon and the Ocean’s depth at the Mausoleum of Chairman Mao with words from his poems on a nearby Placard would help tie it all together in visitors minds.

In the US, former Presidents have a Presidential library of their documents and artifacts from their administration. Perhaps building something similar for the people for each of the past Chinese leaders will showcase the progress made.

Mao cement Chinese believe that they can go thru any obstacle and accomplish anything unlike nationalist Chiang who always believe Chinese need western assistance to achieve something.

I am not a big fan of Mao great leap but one cannot deny his determination and contribution to united China.

As Deng said, he is 30 % bad but 70% good. Therefore, he is still respected. He did policy mistakes but he solidified CHINA into a unified power.

Everyone is trapped in history background. We can tell what people did is good or bad because we are out of the fog they were in. Mao was a staunch communist. He made policies according to communism theories. He didn't betray his faith in the first place.

Now we know communism has flaws. But this is hindsight. Back to Mao age. Soviet Union was an encouraging example for all developing countries. Even western countries were not so confident with their political system when seeing all achievements of Soviet Union. It's very natual for Mao to choose Stalin's path considering the history background he was in.

Chairman Mao makes China a united country with no warlords nor foreign military forces;

Chairman Mao set up CCP and a Meritocracy system that can unite and lead the Chinese people to work hard for a shared target;

Chairman Mao set up PLA and make it a trustable and beloved military force to the Chinese people, no matter in the war time, or natural disaster rescue in peaceful time;

Chairman Mao set up China's initial heavy manufacturing industry, small and fragile, if you evaluate it with the standards today, but it proves to be critical to China's success in manufacturing sector in the later decades.

Chairman Mao destroys all the discriminations against women and pool people, and makes education accessible to kids from even the poorest family.

That's why the young generation in China today have a high respect to Chairman Mao.

Between 1945-75, under Mao Zedong:

•Doubled life expectancy
•Doubled caloric intake

This is why Mao Zedong is immortal in terms of his ideas.

Mao insisted on nuclear and SSBN program at expense of foreign reserve. It ensure China long term stability from foreign intervention and save China from 1969 Sino Soviet border clash. China space program is also a result of Mao insistence on getting one. Mao is the real father of Chinese space program.

Wu Yanhua, deputy head of the China National Space Administration, told reporters on Thursday that "precious moon samples collected by Chang'e-5 will also be stored in Chairman Mao's hometown ofShaoshan, Hunan Province."

Mao once wrote a poem that read: "We can clasp the moon in the ninth heaven. And seize turtles deep down in the five seas. We'll return amid triumphant song and laughter." Wu explained that the lunar materials will be sent to Shaoshan "to make Chairman Mao's wishes come true."
