What's new

Soldiers killed in action are not martyrs. ‘Martyr’ has religious overtones, writes Karan Thapar

Martyr-Hutatma ,svamatartham,Raktha sakshi.

Their is even a hutatma chowk (martyrs chowk) in south mumbai.

Yes it is a 5000 yrs old civilization ,being ignorant doesn't prove otherwise.

How dare you can have "Sanskrit" word for "Martyrs" afterall we were ruled by Sickular Khangress since Independence.

Afterall "Sanskrit" is most "Communal Language", hence "Untouchable" for Sickular Khangress.

Martyrdom is a Christian concept, and involves witnessing about the religion,
even if that results in persecution and death.
Martyrs do not seek death, but they will not back from their belief even
if they are threatened with punishment or even death.

Dying in battle does not make You a Martyr.
That is a pagan system, that Islam has taken over.
Similar to the Viking belief that if you die in battle You go to the Valhalla
party in the evening with free booze and pork chops.

My conclusion is that it is probably wrong to translate Shahadat to Martyrdom.

read Post # 9 again ..

Maybe because we are not xenophobic religious bigots ?
Which is one of the largest religions practiced here. The point is ?

@Kaptaan has selective amnesia.

He really dont know anything about "Hindsa".

the subject of mathematics in Arabic came to known as Hindsa which means 'from India' and a mathematician or engineer in Arabic is called Muhandis which means 'an expert in Mathematics'.

If you take away the Islamic influence from Ganga India, take away the genetic print from the invaders from the West (mostly Muslim) what are you left with? The true shining India. The aboriginals Adivasi who make 10% of India. All you Indian's should thank us for giving you a culture, clothing, architecture, civilization and some with faces that don't crack the mirror.

The real Indians before Islam came - the Adivasi.

Okay, need to be careful here so I don't get banned. But what on earth are in that picture?

What you refer is called "Shahid" meaning Witness.

Shaheed means Martyr.

In Islam, a Shaheed isn't dead, he is sinless.

Obviously that translation is flawed, since the meaning is changed.

A Martyr according to the original definition always has a choice.
The consequences of this choice is death, and he is still making the choice.
It is an act of personal bravery.

A soldier which is killed in a car accident, on his way to a flower arrangement course
is not "martyred" just because he is a soldier.
A soldier throwing himself on a hand grenade is also not a martyr,
because he does it to save his buddies.

A captured soldier told to abandon the faith, or be killed which chooses to be killed is.

In Islamic context a soldier who dies doing his duty is a martyr.

A child who dies going to school to learn is also a martyr.

In essence we have several stages or types of martyrdoms.

You have shaheed, which You translate to Martyr, which is flawed
because You are trying to use a well defined term for something else.
It is degrading personal bravery.
Better to use Shaheed in English as well.

.
Please don't. It's refreshing having you here. Clear, straight and to the point. I like that.

They call them Indians.

Thanks bro.

All I am going to say about that picture is that I now understand why they hate Pakistan and Pakistani people so much 8-)

Darned age.

I do.

Arabic came to known as Hindsa which means 'from India'
In my dictionary it means "from Pakistan". My dictionary tells me that when that term was used first it was derived from Hind (Indus River) and was used for Sindh (present day province of Pakistan).

What next? Do I expect Afro-Jeecans from West India claming they were the "Hindsa"?

.
How you render the meaning of ancient words or translate ancient names is open to subjective bias. Tell me how the hell do you equate Hindsa with the modern day Indian Republic? Do tell me please? Like I said before, it is like Roma gypsy beggers from Romania claming Roman civilization all because of the similar sounding name.

@Sinopakfriend Hoping you enjoying the fantastic weather in Netherlands. Take it easy and don't forget the suncream. You Dutch burn easy. Have a nice evening.

@PAKISTANFOREVER Stay cool. Don't get banned. And remember. The only good Indian is a >beep< Indian. And finally make love not war with Gangias.

You have no knowledge of the concept so better leave it.

And we do say "shaheed" .. it's only for English speakers that the word "martyr" is used.

There are different categories of shaheed or shahadat.

You know nothing about.

Pretty much inside.. hey fever. Yes, I burn easily...will take your advice. You too have a pleasant evening and great Sunday.

Next week weather might go down hill. Rain is good for my fever.

I for one wish people of Gangees all the best with their dialectic acceleration.

Ancient Pak has made enough love with the people of the plains... time for total separation perhaps...

Ta,
