Sikh radicals 'appoint' convicted terrorist Jagtar Singh Hawara as Akal Takht chief

Amritsar: Deepening the crisis within Sikh religious affairs, radical Sikhs on Tuesday announced the "appointment" of convicted Khalistani terrorist Jagtar Singh Hawara as the Jathedar (chief) of the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikh religion.




The congregation of radicals also announced the "removal" of all Sikh high priests.

The appointment was announced by radical Sikh leaders during a 'Sarbat Khalsa' (grand assembly of Sikhs) congregation at Chaba near Amritsar on Tuesday.

Hawara is the main accused in the assassination of then Punjab chief minister Beant Singh who was killed by a human bomb in Chandigarh on August 31, 1995.

The congregation decided that the present Akal Takht Jathedar Gurbachan Singh be removed from his post and that Hawara, who is serving a life term in the Beant Singh assassination case, be appointed.

During the congregation, in view of Hawara being in prison, the leaders announced that former MP DS Mand would be the interim jathedar of the Akal Takht and would address the Sikh community from the shrine, located inside the Golden Temple complex, on Diwali on Wednesday.

The congregation was organised by a few radical Sikh groups.

Accusing them of "genocide of Sikhs", the congregation named former police chief KPS Gill and Operation Bluestar commander KS Brar, both Sikhs themselves, as 'tankhaiya' (person guilty of religious misconduct) and directed them to appear before the Akal Takht by November 20.

No it is more then that i believe slowly slowly Khalistan movement coming to light again, Sikhs are quite desperate decades passed but no apology ever given by Indian hostile regime for 1984 riots and Harminder Sahib (Gurudawara) attack.

Revival of Khalistan movement?
THE signs filtering through the Indian news media suggest that yet another attempt is being made for a separate Khalistan state. This demand is reappearing in east Punjab, the state dominated by Sikhs.

The well-coordinated attack on a police station in Gurdaspur presumably carried out by Sikh separatists has demonstrated their ability and capacity to take the enemy by surprise.

As expected, the finger of suspicion was initially raised against Pakistan but in the absence of any credible and supportive evidence for the baseless claim, common sense seems to have ultimately prevailed, and Indian authorities are grappling with the issue from a different and realistic angle.

Pakistan itself is the greatest victim of terrorism in which more than 50,000 innocent citizens have lost their lives. Instead of blaming any other country, we have identified the villains, and our valiant armed forces are successfully engaging the enemy and rendering tremendous sacrifices.

Likewise India is also faced with several separatist movements. It would better for New Delhi to redress the grievances of those who have preferred to take up arms against the government instead of sitting at the negotiating table. India should think before making baseless and childish allegations against Pakistan for its follies.

The demand to release the convicted Khalistan terrorists has put the state politics on a boil.
Though no direct role of Sikh terrorist groups has been found initially in Gurdaspur terror attack there have been three important developments - the confessions of the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) chief Jagtar Singh Tara that he along with LeT had planned a similar strike in Pathankot, the recovery of mortar shell with Indian markings and a written threat to kill seven Punjab Shiv Sena leaders immediately after the terror strike by the Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) has given rise to the speculations that the incident may be a joint attempt by the LeT and Sikh militant groups to revive militancy in Punjab.

However, Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and former Punjab DGP KPS Gill both have said that the Sikh militant outfits do not have enough strength to revive militancy in the state. "Militancy could not succeed until the people of a region support it. The people of Punjab outrightly oppose terrorism. This is the reason it cannot raise its ugly head here," Parkash Singh Badal said.

KPS Gill who visited Chandigarh after the Gurdaspur attack also said that reviving terrorism in Punjab will not be easy.

"Anyone who has been convicted for capital punishment should be sent to the gallows. I have seen life returning to track after the end of terrorism in Punjab. Punjab's people have rejected terrorism," Gill said. Badal and Gill may say that reviving militancy in Punjab is not possible but the fact is the hardliners are taking it easy. They still claim they will get Khalistan out of India by 2020. The demand to get the 65 convicted Sikhs facing serious charges under TADA is part of the "referendum" being sought by the separatists.

However, the demand to release the convicted Khalistan terrorists has put Punjab politics on a boil. A stand-off between hard-line Sikh organisations and the Punjab government is expected, as the hardliners who have been demanding the release of 65 convicts have upped the ante against the state government on the issue.

The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders, which had ensured hardliners that they will pave the way for the release of former terrorists, have been left high and dry by a Supreme Court order which says that those facing charges under TADA cannot be granted clemency. As facts say out of the 65 convicts only two can be released in near future as they have completed their minimum sentences. CM Badal has informed the hardliners that as per law, only two can be released but the pro-Khalistan groups are not ready to accept this.

Vote bank politics is regaining its head in Punjab as the Assembly elections draw near. Despite the clear directions of country's intelligence agencies that mass transfer or release of convicted Khalistan terrorists can fan the anti-national wave, Punjab's politicians and hardliners continue to raise the demand.

Accusing the Punjab CM of raking up Khalistan agenda, former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh has also joined the chorus now. He has announced his support to Surat Singh Khalsa, a Hassanpur resident who was on a hunger strike for six months before being forcibly lifted by the Punjab Police last week as his condition worsened.

"Surat Singh Khalsa's demand was totally justified since it is against the law and the Constitution to keep somebody behind bars when he has completed his sentence," Amarinder said.

The AAP's Sangrur MP Bhagwant Singh Mann had also raised the matter under Rule 377 in the Lok Sabha on releasing the prisoners from jails who have completed their jail term in Punjab. The truth is that so far only four convicted Khalistan terrorists were hanged.

The sad part is that the Khalistan terrorists who mercilessly killed hundreds were termed as martyrs. They are honoured by the SGPC every year and a memorial has been built in their name.

Jagtar Singh Hawara (Punjabi: ਜਗਤਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਹਵਾਰਾ) is the current Jathedar ofSri Akaal Takht Sahib, the highest Sikh religious seat.[1] He a member ofBabbar Khalsa. He is convicted in the assassination of then Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, who was killed by a human bomb in Chandigarh, on August 31, 1995, who was responsible for not taking any action against the mass killings of Sikh Youths. During his tenure, Punjab Police were very powerful and had control of a semi-police state. They killed many Sikhs just because they were Sikhs. No investigations or FIR's were held, and many rose higher in the ranks by killing Sikhs.

He is a Punjabi Sikh and belongs to Hawara village in Fatehgarh Sahib.[2] He is one of the people accused in the assassination of the Punjab Chief MinisterBeant Singh.[3] He was accused of the murder of a Granthi (Sikh Priest) of Sri Muktsar Sahib at the age of 15 but was later acquitted.[4][5] Hawara came back into limelight, in 2004, when he escaped from maximum security jail at Burail, along with 2 other Sikh prisoners by digging a 90 feet tunnel with his bare hands[6]

On November 10, 2015, Jagtar Singh was appointed as the Jathedar of the Sri Akaal Takht by the Sarbat Khalsa. He replaces Giani Gurbachan Singh who is known for being corrupt and going against Sikh teachings. [7] Jagtar Singh Hawara is the 35th Jathedar of Sri Akaal Takht.
