Sikh man battered by racist thug who yelled: 'Terrorist, go back to your country, bin Laden'

Many Sikhs in India don't grow beard or head hair...why don't these Sikhs in Us do the same? Why become target? Why to attract anger of local people who think you are a Muslim?

Spoken like a true hindu:coffee:

I will be honest do you really think the racist American or Europeans care

Your brown (or black in your case) and foreign to them and if the opportunity arises and they are drunk, dumb or racist enough then they will attack you

How about you grow a pair of balls and defend yourself

. .
I think U.S citizen just looked his beard and he thought he is Muslim.
Sad to see innocent man suffered such treatment for no reason.
May be he was watching 9/11 graphic images and he got mad.

Bravo some think its not fashionable or cool to have a turban thats all. Thats y they don't grow beard or turban.
What u're saying is all Sikh should leave their customs so that they can mix in their society ? Say that in front of a Sikh with a turban and tell me his response.

Here is the reality...It does not matter the country/society, there is a dominant culture and ways of living. The old advice applies: When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

The US is a much more diverse society than most people realize, especially when they have never been to the US. There are positives and negatives to this. The positive is that it does compels Americans to be tolerant of diversity but the negative is that there are those who will resist change, who will not be educated even informally, and who prefers the status quo. There are little to no clues as to which type you will meet. For Americans, sometimes the average American does not know what he/she is until something as psychologically traumatic as 9/11 occurs to force him/her to face his/her own self and reveals which type he/she is.

When I came to the US, our family felt compelled to learn English as that language is part of the dominant culture. The car is important, practically a need, in American society, so practically everyone who is of age and coming of age learned to drive and drive the American way. The list of things that one must do in order to get along and get ahead in America is long but the idea of assimilation is no different in other countries.

Like it or not, settling and living in America does involves risks and meeting ignorant people is one of them.

Yes, I know US is a diverse community and Americans are tolerant (living in India I can get it some what since we are also a very diverse country) but the other group u mentioned IMO they increased heavily after 9/11 only , it was a ugly reminder that US is also vulnerable . Before 9/11 US was a fearless nation but post 9/11 US became into a much more fearful and at the same time a dangerous country for both its citizens and and outsiders ( and if u're a Muslim add Afghanistan and Iraq too ) .

And the risks u are pointing out is with every country I see people targeted for daily basis here . Trust me US is doing fine in comparison .

The members coming here and condemning the US as whole are just being selective and completely ignoring condition of there own county.
Regards.

Americans have the right to be ignorant and stupid, yes, but they also are subject to the full force of the law, if they attempt harm to anybody else, as this person will soon find out.

In many ways, I seriously disagree with this.

Am not talking of 'right' in the legal sense but in the moral sense. In principle, if someone want to remain ignorant, I say let him/her be. But the problem I have is that if Americans pride themselves on being a country of immigrants with emphasis that immigrants infuse the American society with new ideas to make the country, not only grows but grows faster than others, then by that boast and emphasis, the speaker effectively done away with his/her right to remain ignorant, especially ignorant of how immigrants needs assists in assimilation into the American society.

I do not see this as a two-way street but as two coming to a middle ground. Not immediately and this is where the burden initially falls upon the immigrant. Yes, the immigrant can expect the native to be welcoming, but the immigrant must understand changes must be gradual because not everyone tolerate changes to the same degree. So yes, initially, the immigrant may have to give more than the native. For the American, if he sees the immigrant gave more than that middle ground, do your part to pull him to that middle ground by giving up some of your demands. Tolerate his different mode of dress or different cooking, and so on.

As a whole, the American society have been largely successful at this. But as this incident shows, not all Americans are willing to go up to that middle point and stay there.

Why always Sikhs?

The Sikh turban is quite distinctive and easy to recognize.

What I meant to say was that Americans have the right to choose how they wish to think and behave, as long as they do not harm anybody in violation of the law. If they do, the repercussions are rather swift.

I agree with you on that. I just wanted to clarify my personal position, as an immigrant myself, on how the immigrant and the native should be towards each other.
