Possibly the limits of technology during the time. The MFSTAR used on Kolkata is much bigger than the SPY-1D, but India managed to stick the radar at the most prime location, which is a testament to India's design capabilities.

Unlike the AESA we use, American radars are PESA and much more bulkier and heavier.

Why China decided to copy everything the Americans have, that can only be answered by your people.

Well you didn't understood their scenario I guess. It's 2 Vs 1. There will be PLAN on our Eastern Flank and PN or our west.
