Syria's MiG-29 were bought in the 1980s. They barely fly. JF-17 has better capability than MiG-29 at half the servicing cost.

There was talk of Syria looking at buying upgradef MiG-31s from surplus Russian stock. This was back before the war started. Then there was talk of Syria interested in MiG-35s and/or MiG -29SMTs. However, that seems to have been postponed till after the war is over. In all likelihood, once Idlib has been taken back, and peace talks begin between the rebels and Syrian Govt. Then there could be some possibility of a MiG-35 deal. Syria does have the money to buy big ticket items. But all of that would only be possible, once Syria has full control of the entire territory, East of River Euphrates.

I think they were interested in MiG-29M which Egypt bought. However being twin engines MiG-29M costs twice as much to service compared to JF-17. Syria don't have Egypt's economy power so JF-17 is more suitable for Syria.
