Shortage of labor in so called "poor" India

Just like they have ways to calculate poverty rate - anyone living below a certain amount -, they have ways to calculate this as well. Also the article said that only 500 million Indians are part of the workforce.

Actually I forgot something interesting. The labourer makes 100 rupees per day. That labourer probably is feeding a wife and children, maybe parents as well.

Nope in here ,usually all family members go to work unless he/she is sick or is not interested..Usually like house maid jobs and cleaning jobs or even panchayat jobs/muncipality/corporation jobs.

Another Indian (divya) said that anyone who lives on less than 15 rupees is considered to be in poverty.

Here's an interesting statistic.

Nearly 80 pct of India lives on half dollar a day | Reuters

80% of Indians live on less than 50 cent a day.

I think you got your facts wrong. There's a survey done by World Bank which says 80% of Indians living on 2 USD per day.

The survey was done quite some time back, probably in 2007 or 06.

By the way, in 2 USD, you can have a happy pack(or whatever they say it) in MacD in India, smaller one though! ;)

There are huge benefits for "being poor" in India. ration @ very minimum rate, free stuffs, writing off loans etc. Everybody wants to be poor... Apart from that, there is dealerships & concessions in the colleges etc.

Mean to say it is not 80% under poverty in India.

In my state, it is people who are earning less than Rs-350,000/-per year is under poverty line for few state govt. schemes.

I never said 80% live in poverty. I said 80% live below 50 US cents a day. Indian poverty rate is Rs 15 per day I believe which gives poverty rate of around 35-40%. The point however is that 80% are quite poor, i.e. living in pretty abject conditions.

Btw, again, I don't like to start a pissing contest in things like this but the thread title sounded kind of arrogant to me.

I think you're making far reaching conclusions from your own personal experience here. For instance, you have certain experiences where you live (you live in a richer state btw) and you make far reaching conclusions about the whole country.

No way 50 cents is like 20-30 rupees or something..

And 80% ppl living on 20 rupees..??

India has some 700+mln mobile subscribers.. there wage is not enough for a recharge..

But the figure I mentioned was by Indian government. States generally don't lie about these kinds of things that internal issues.

It's 2 USD not 50 cents. And survey was done by World Bank not GOI.

Nope i am not judging on the basis of my stay in a richer state..

i know by hand the situation in southern tamilnadu state where 90%+ ppl are farmers or are doing farm related labourers or in industries ( like shops for manure and labourers in markets or even middlemen).. they are all in below poverty line... the minimum wage is 80+ ( 2 dollors)

Mate it's not me saying this, it's the article. The figures are from late 2007 IIRC, but I doubt it was has changed much given that these things don't change significantly in 3 years.

Cell phone figures is not much to go by man. They are dirt cheap in South Asia. I believe more people have cell phones than toilets. Having cell phones does not mean you are in great condition.

I really don't know of any such survey, this is the first time I'm reading this. It sounds illogical too. May be I'll have to look for it.

Mate I am not sure which one is right. You may well be right, or these figures are two different things and we might both be right. I don't think I am mis-reading the figure here. You can go and check yourself.

Labor rates in Punjab/Haryana are 200 Rs per day, Delhi even more....
There is huge shortage of laborers in Punjab/Haryana. But slowly bangladeshi's are filling the gaps. Bihari laborers got standards now, they prefer to stay in Bihar rather than migrate to other states now.
