Shooter Heena Sidhu withdraws from tournament in Iran, says won't wear hijab

its a mixed bag.. you got to see Pakistan of the 70s it was liberal and progressive
.
Only in cities, there was some semblance of Western and Indian (Saarri dress etc) influence on the dress of Pakistani women (which you are calling 'liberal and progressive activity).............how much "liberal and progressive" was Baluchistan, Pakhtunkhwa, Interior Sindh and rural Punjab in 70s?

Shooter Heena Sidhu has pulled out of the 9th Asian Airgun Shooting Championships scheduled to be held in December in Tehran stating that she did not like the dress code for women at the event, The Times of India reported.

"Forcing tourists or foreign guests to wear a hijab is not a sporting thing. I don't like it, so I pulled out," Heena told TOI.

While other shooters in the Indian team are ready to comply with the rules, Heena said her decision is her personal choice. "You are practising your religion, let me practise mine. If you are forcing your religious beliefs on me, then I don't want to compete."

The dress code on the tournament's official website reads, "Women's clothing in the shooting range and public places is required to conform to the rules and regulations of I. R. Iran."

Heena took to Twitter on Saturday to address the issue.

"We have good ties with the Iranian shooting federation and we respect their culture and tradition. Whoever goes to Iran- tourists or diplomats- wears the hijab. Except Heena, all other Indian women shooters have accepted it," National Rifle Association of India president Raninder Singh told the paper.

This is, however, not the first time that Heena has withdrawn from an event stating issues with the dress code.

In 2013, one of the reasons Heena stated while pulling out of the 6th Asian Air Gun Championships, which was also held in Iran, was the dress code.

"The event in Iran, where the female shooters will have to wear a headscarf during the competition will need a different kind of practice. I am not used it and to get used to it I will have to practice for a minimum of three weeks. It will require a special kind of training and time dedicated specifically for it," she told Mumbai Mirror.

The pistol shooter at the time was recovering from a neck and shoulder injury and said that "instead of wasting my time and energy on preparing for the event in Iran, I would rather complete my rehabilitation".

So what she didn't go. You go to someone's house then you should follow the rules and show some respect. She is a drama queen looking for some cheap fame. Its like i am not coming to your house because i don't want to respect you. But i am going to run around and exploit the sitiation to get some cheap low life fame.

absolutely agree with her
If someone in bikini shows up at your door and your mommy is standing there what just what would you do. Invite her in to the house staright to guest room or will you be acting like a deer standing infront of a car.

.
none in my family thankyou
what about yours?
Pretty sure your grandma did or her mom.

My grandmother... yes, so was every other Muslim woman of that time.

Hijab is nothing to be ashamed of. I support the true freedom to wear or not to wear. Be religious or don't be. I will defend the right for both. Besides it's their country their rules. Even if that rule is stupid (which i say it is ... because religion is a personal choice and should not be mandated)

Be proud of who you are. Otherwise the imitator to the originators will always be:

Wow not wearing hijab is like wearing a bikini.

this is noting about not respecting the host. Heena has her self respect. She does not want to be forced to hear a hijab. So when Iran says you have to wear it if you come here she says no thanks I will rather stay at home.

The Muslim women who go to France and want to wear Burqas and burqinis should also do the same. They have their self respect. They feel that they should wear it but France does not allow it. So instead of going there and complaining about islamophobia and what not they should just stay at home

i wonder why all the socities in the world want to enforce their rules on women in order to show how liberal or conservative they are.

i think there should be a nation who also enforces such stupid law on men. May be they forbid men to wear underwear to prove their secularism or liberalism. I am sure there will be plenty of support from men all over the world who want to spend a life like a free man and provide fresh air to their proudself and not suffocate their holy self like a prisoner. I don't consider it funny because the men has been doing the same when it comes to deciding suitable attire for women in order to prove a pointless point

PS: I don't engage in trolling as per my track record on PDF so please accept my apology in advance if its offensive for some of our respectable members and consider it a one-off post.

Thank you
