KARACHI: The Sindh High Court on Friday granted bail extension to former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf, DawnNews reported.

Pervez Musharraf appeared before the court amid lawyers chanting slogans against him. An angry protester also threw a shoe at the former president which missed him.

Earlier on March 22, the court had granted protective bail to Musharraf in three high-profile cases in which he was facing arrest warrants.

A single-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Mushir Alam, had granted protective bail to Musharraf in the case of ‘illegal confinement’ of 62 judges after he declared a state of emergency in the country on November 3, 2007.

Another two-member bench headed by Justice Sajjad Ali Shah granted pre-arrival protective bail to the former military leader in two more cases for two weeks in which he was facing non-bailable arrest warrants.

The cases are the murder of former governor and chief minister of Balochistan Nawab Akbar Bugti in August 2007 and the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in a gun-and-bomb attack in Rawalpindi in December 2007.

Seems old or new.....Pakistani politicians have the same mindset.....rather than doing some worthwhile for the country, they merely exercise in chest thumping and criticising every one else.

I think it was that Iraqi journalist who started this trend of shoe throwing worldwide, when he threw a shoe at George Bush. In the next few months, politicians across India, cutting across party lines, had shoes thrown at them. State level as well as national level politicians. Chidambaram, the then home minister was the first to be treated with the dubious honor. I think the next was Advani. Then state level guys, including a chief minister or two. After a while, the trend became uninteresting, and when a shoe was thrown, there wouldn't even be much of a commotion - a security guard would approach and take it and place it in a corner. Gradually that custom faded.

Now it seems that the custom has been picked up in Pakistan. Is this a first in Pakistan? Anyway mushy must be glad that it was a shoe, and not bullets that flew at him, like what happened to Benazir Bhutto under his watch.

The prosecutor also blamed Musharraf for failing to provide adequate security during the rally in which a suicide bomber blew himself up beside Bhutto's car, killing her.

This warrant (and two others) was the reason for the delay in returning from his self imposed exile, and what stymied his political ambitions thus far.

So your courts, and many people in your country are of the opinion that he holds criminal culpability in her assassination, for failing to provide adequate security for her.

I did not go so far, all I said was that the incident happened under his watch - which is undeniably true. His job description may not say "watchman", but that does not mean that he wasn't responsible for the security situation in the country, and especially for that person on that occasion. Whether he is culpable or not is for your courts to decide, and I have no opinion on that.
