Shocking, shocking, shameful, nothing else
ISLAMABAD: How shocking is the latest list of 11 demands conveyed by Washington to Islamabad? Though rejected outright by defence and foreign ministries, one striking thing that immediately comes to mind is: how dare you? But to be fair, it is not their fault, we have offered ourselves for sale and subjugation. Nothing but shameful.
Congratulations to those, who were taking pride in the post 9/11 policies of General (retd) Musharraf. Look what is happening to the so-called "Frontline State" in the extremely-controversial war on terror.
We were saved from being reverted to the "Stone Ages" but are now being asked to become a conquered state, with no self-respect. Is it time to formally become a US colony after we have already been reduced to American slaves?
We were taught in the school of Tipu Sultan's great saying: "One-day of life of a lion is better than 1000 years of life of a jackal." But what we have experienced and have been reminded time and again after 9/11 is just the opposite of this great lesson of Tipu Sultan. Such messages have turned obsolete, as we have become "pragmatic" today.
Our post 9/11 services to the Americans are acclaimed though the mantra of "do more" never ends. In the "national interest" we handed over hundreds of our own nationals as well as foreigners to Washington during the recent years. We are killing our people to please the Americans and also don't mind if the US forces choose to go for a killing spree of innocents in our territory.
We have given them the license to kill. We also have given them free rights of intelligence. Not only their spy planes (unmanned aerial vehicles) are freely flying in our air space, they have already established a wide network of CIA and FBI agents in Pakistan and that too with the permission of the last military regime.
In return we are getting dollars by the billions and not being pushed back to stone ages. We should be grateful to Mr Bush and his close buddy Mr Musharraf.
Suicide bombings, which have killed hundreds including the PPP's ex-chairperson Benazir Bhutto during these years; direct attacks on Pakistan defence forces; and the Talibanisation of our tribal areas, particularly South Waziristan and Swat district, are the gifts of this Mush-Bush friendship.
Greatly encouraged by our welcoming gestures even at the cost of the lives of our people, Washington has overtly started dictating to us as to what kind of government they want to see in Pakistan after the 2008 elections. The likes of Negropontes, Bouchers and Pattersons are, and have been, active to configure a government in Islamabad of their choice. They say that they are doing it in the best interest of Pakistan.
The Americans are also resisting the restoration of the deposed judges. Though a very large population in Pakistan is demanding the reinstatement of pre-Nov 3 judiciary, Washington does not deem it to be in the best interest of Pakistan and the people of Pakistan. They know we don't deserve justice and fair play because otherwise questions would be asked about the missing persons and there would be some accountability for those attacked and killed in the name of al-Qaeda, Taliban or extremists. People are now expecting from their newly elected parliament, and the future government to review Islamabad's unqualified support to the war against Muslims, in the name of war on terror and get us back our lost independence.
Leaders of the winning political parties have already indicated to do so. One man's rule is over and now we have the peoples' representatives to decide the fate of this unwanted war.
