Activists of Shiv Sena burnt the American flag here in protest against recent humiliation of Indian consular officer in New York Devyani Khobragade who was arrested in for visa fraud and allegedly strip-searched.

Activists led by Sena's state vice president Inderjit Karwal held a protest march from Hanumangarhi temple and assembled at local bus stand and burnt the American flag yesterday night.

Raising slogans against the US, the activists demanded unconditional apology from the US for its "gross misbehaviour" with India's lady diplomat.

They demanded dropping of criminal case against her and granting of privileges and diplomatic immunities available to diplomats working for foreign missions accredited to the UN.

Devyani's arrest had kicked up a diplomatic row and a stand-off between India and the US after which she was transferred as Counsellor at the New York-based Permanent Mission of India to UN.

NEW YORK: The UN says it has processed the Indian government’s request to register the country’s deputy consul general, who is accused of lying on a visa form about how much she paid her housekeeper, as a member of the country’s mission to the United Nations.

But the UN spokesman’s office said the US State Department must approve the transfer of Devyani Khobragade from her consulate post to India’s UN Mission.

The Indian government reportedly sought to transfer Khobragade to the UN Mission because diplomats there have greater immunity.

The Dec. 13 arrest of Khobragade has sparked a diplomatic storm between the United States and India.

Khobragade, who was arrested outside her daughter’s school, complained that she was strip-searched and held in a cell “with drug addicts” until her appearance before a judge.

US prosecutors say Khobragade lied on a visa form about how much she paid her housekeeper and actually paid her around $3 per hour. She has pleaded not guilty to charges she submitted false documents to obtain a visa for the Indian housekeeper.

The UN spokesman’s office said it received a letter from India’s UN Ambassador Asoke Mukerji requesting Khobragade’s registration as a member of India’s UN Mission on Dec. 18 and it was processed on Dec. 20.

Khobragade could face a maximum sentence of 10 years for visa fraud and five years for making a false declaration if convicted. She has said she has full diplomatic immunity.

The State Department disputes that, saying her immunity is limited to acts performed in the exercise of consular functions.

New Delhi: India has withdrawn all identity cards for American consular officers as part of its "firm reciprocal measures" after the arrest and humiliation of its diplomat Devyani Khobragade in the US.

Sources said the immunity of US consular officials in India is now at par with Indian officials in the US.

"New cards which are exact replicas of cards provided to Indian Consulate officials in the US are being given in lieu of cards withdrawn from the American consular staff," sources said.

Family members of US consular officials will also no longer get the ID cards, which come with special privileges, since family members of Indian Consulate officials in the US are also not provided such cards, sources said.

India had announced a slew of retaliatory measures after Devyani Khobragade was arrested for alleged visa fraud on December 12 and strip-searched.
