Bangla always deserved their own identity. It was only a matter of when. They are a strong community of people unique in their own right.

They must be careful not be bullied around by India for the sake of a few dollars.

All the comments by India/Pakistan people here don't reveal the ground reality in Bangladesh.

Seems you guys are all excited. Nobody in Bangladesh gives two hoots - they are going on with their lives as usual. They know it's a state visit. Pleasantries will be exchanged. Big promises will be made and broken later. They've all seen it before.

Politically and intellectually the Bengali nation's pysche and exposure in this day and age has surpassed what fakery or idealism Hasina's camp or any other political 'faction' can offer or influence. Very hard to fool even the 'Aam admi' these days. Bengalis (at least from the lower middle class on up) are today as hard-nosed and commercial-minded as any in China or Singapore.

Idealism is cheap now. What happened 44 years ago has now ceased as bait - it is 'rejected goods' politically. Sheikh Hasina's use of '1971' is seen as only a way to retain the 'Gaddi'. Nothing more.

People do remember the open-ended 'Bewaqufi' of Yahya/Niazi/Bhutto and how the Indians catalyzed the event.

Those involved in the image of the Race-Course surrender are mostly gone and six feet under or exhumed. Same with the actors who steered the steering wheel at the Vikrant command station.

These are useless artifacts to the Bengali generation today and that's how we like it. The future of the Bengali nation is now to look East toward ASEAN and China and trade for becoming a 2nd world nation in as short a time as possible. And spiritually be a modern, progressive Muslim nation - not what any other country dictates about us culturally.

The people I speak with (even lower middle class people) in Dhaka know all this. And they will only 'let' Hasina keep her Gaddi as long as she cooperates with that vision. Otherwise - she too will be gone. Whether in a coup or peacefully. Hopefully the latter.

Fall of Dhaka was not all the fault of West Pakistan. The Bengalis were conspiring with the Indians as far back as 1960. Whatever happened in 71 is part of history we ought to learn from. Bangladesh will never truly be a free country, Haseena's current govt came into power through a sham election paid for by the Indians. It was created to be an Indian vassal state and will remain so.

Many great nations have lost wars and much more but it doesn't stop them from moving on and becoming even more powerful. Its high time we say goodbye to South Asia and extend ourselves into Central Asia, Iran and Turkey.
