There are 2 main groups of economist in Pakistan Pro IMF and those who are against IMF ... Dr. Ishfaq Ahmed Khan represent the group who are not in favour of IMF ..... while another groups of economists also exist who are not in favour of IMF and want to get rid of IMF as soon as possible but accept as necessary evil in current situation .... Shaukat Tareen is part of this group.

Hafeez Sheikh was part of pro IMF lobby ..... I personally believe IK by this move want to give signal that he is not too eager to continue with IMF may be before elections we may see the PTI doing something related to this .... and IK is preparing some move in this direction before 2023 elections.

People quoting his performance in PPP ere dont know 2 things:

i. He was finance minister in PPP era during worst possible time, 2008 global financial crisis.
ii. He quit as finance minister when he realised PPP was not serious about any reforms.

He indeed sees IMF as 'necessary evil', he is not from the likes of Baqir and Hafeez sheikh who are imported guns, he very much Pakistani down to the bone. That means he knows how to mobilise revenues in Pakistan without the usual clichés found in text books that our imported financial managers always exercise.

The real test will be of IK whether he will be serious to push reforms proposed by ST. I am hopeful because he has been offered positions in this government from day 1, there would be a reason why he finally accepted one.

Is the finance minister a gaddi of a peer that one person should stay for a long time?

Tareen can do a good job if he is given political backing and a free hand to privatize Soes and other steps.

May be many people like a model where one person is there for eternity or has absolute power.

Its good these changes are made to tell people that everyone is replaceable.

Cant understand the drastic changes being made with reshuffling. Changes cannot come overnight. IK needs to let the team work whoever he has chosen. This raises serious questions about PM Khan's own capabilities when it comes to selecting people for important posts.

I cant say with surety but there are reports/rumours that IK personally offered Finance ministry to ST repeatedly .... but he was not agreeing to it and I believe this time it was the 3rd attempt when Ik personally made offer to him once again ....

You don't think it's a problem that we've had a Finance Minister last 17 days in office? Either he did something majorly wrong or the PM appointed a man and randomly changed his mind 17 days later. If he was incompetent, then why has he been assigned as Minister of Energy? Maybe he was replacing the last Minister of Energy who in my opinion failed in his role to control circular debt. If thats the case then why has that guy been rewarded with the role of Minister of Economic Affairs?

There is something suspicious about this.

Unfortunately I expect this will happen. All we can hope is that it is as least as possible. The reason is political and not economic.

Majority of Pakistan awaam are ignorant, they expect instant gratification rather than the idea of suffering today for a better tomorrow. With elections now 24 months away the PTI government is now actutely aware of the election cycle.

The government will be under pressure from their MNA's and coalition partners to chuck some goodies so that when time comes for elections their constituents will be please into voting for them again. Thus I expect PTI government will be forced to loosen the strings and make decisions based on politics.

Even in UK governments tend to make tough decisions early in the election cycle and then ease off as they go into the elections. To put it bluntly if the PTI government does not now shower money on the public comes 2023 it will be either Bhutto or a Sharif in power.

It's that simple.

In the UK they have a better approach to this. They promise the world, announce policies that you won't see immediate impact for, do some limited spending in popular areas, like a public service pay rise or a drop in duty on alchohol. You win an election and re-adjust at the next budget.
