I think you're mistaking the situation in South Asia with Scandinavian countries.

Although I'll be labeled as a misogynist for saying this - feminists have succeeded in legally emasculating first world men to a completely uneven situation where women have an unfair upper hand. That is why husbands in the first world stay married out of fear of financial loss (losing half of one's property), which is a hypocrisy. There is no love left in most Western marriages.

In South Asian countries - divorce typically means separation, good luck trying to collect alimony or child-support. That being said - wealthy people are nice enough to provide it - out of fear of a bad reputation in society. If you can't afford alimony and/or child-support, no one will force you to provide it. The laws are there in books only....

And there is no splitting property in half like in the US. Men keep their property.

Also - wealthy men in South Asia these days almost always have one or two all-expenses-paid secret mistresses. The foreign trips and vacations are had with mistresses and not the wife.

Wives exist as a convenient wholesome face-saving measure in order to have needed offspring.

Well look at things from a woman's perspective. If you are a woman in "South Asian" countries and your husband starts treating you like trash at age 40...because you aren't the "young cute thing" he knew from long ago (or some other petty reason)..what options do you have:
1) ask for a divorce..and live in poverty since you get nothing and have no means of supporting yourself. Re-marriage is doubtful since you are passed childbearing age.
2) stay married and live in complete unhappiness for the rest of your life

In the "there is no love left in most Western marriages" (rolls eyes) the same woman has:
1) ask for a divorce, get some money and/or property/alimony and be a step above poverty. Re-marriage is doubtful since you are passed childbearing age.
2) stay married and live in complete unhappiness for the rest of your life

While recently a Chinese profession is advocating polyandry……

haha touché

I dont know about other countries but in Pakistan to do a second marriage you need full consent of the first wife other wise the second marriage is invalidated by courts and i think there is jail time for the man aswell
Divorce law of Pakistan Talaq and Khula Rules, Laws of Pakistan concerning Muslim marriages

Well here's a twist. Say the husband is a millionaire. For what reason would a current wife want to give full consent for a second wife? Probably none. So theoretically if a man is successful he would have no chance of having a second wife.

I dont know why but some actually do give consent(i think mainly to avoid divorce and breaking up of their families) and statiscally speaking more well off Pakistanis are more likely to be in polygamous marriages than their counterparts with thinner wallets

Getting back to topic, its senseless article and doesnt hold its merit in current age.

1. Sex ratio is already heavily screwed up, and if one guy will get 4 females, then this might lead to old tribal wars kind of situation where they use to kidnap the girls / females from other tribes.

2. Meeting day to day expenses of one wife and a one kid is stretching the common men to limits, thinking about multiple wives and kids and managing the same is practically very very difficult.

3. Unlike previous era where family member use to compromise, the current era wants freedom and have less space to compromise and thus there is absence of the cement that could keep up a big family together.

I find this perspective totally limiting and (pardon the expression) quite negative. Childbearing age is irrelevant in today's day and age. Women are not simply baby-making machines with expiry dates.

While it does depend somewhat on class and education, I personally know forty year old women who routinely work out, are 'fit' as anything and are happily divorced. Yes they live in Bangladesh. Yes they passed their menopause years.

But these women are also highly educated, work in corporate roles and are financially independent. Some own their own businesses and are quite successful.

The point is human beings (women included) hold their emancipation and choice of lifestyle in their own hands.

If you are lazy and don't have initiative - then you are helpless. If you want to be independent and want to make something of yourself, you can do it. Even if you're uneducated, even at forty, even if you're a divorced woman. Yes it won't be easy, but it is doable.

I have seen it. Apni aankhon se dekha.

40 year olds are young chicks.

50 year olds are where the action is.

There is something hugely emancipating for a woman sexually when she knows there is no risk of getting pregnant anymore.

Polygamy reminds me of Stone Age. If you really want a close knit family then you must stick to one partner.
But if money is your priority then....do whatever floats your boat.

Ms. Roy does excite me having a beautiful mind. She was featured in the 2014 list of Time 100, the 100 most influential people in the world. I find her opinions quite agreeable.

An honorable, proud woman...she deserves being offered honorary citizenship by any country in the world. And her values/views and those of our enlightened citizens in Bangladesh coincide beautifully...

Hmmmm .... ok. You can have her mind on loan.

I have no use for it.

I agree. To add to that, women's role cannot be neglected in the kitchen too. The good thing is, the closer they come to that nonexisting expiry date, the better they tend to perform their kitchen duties. :smitten:

This is for the rancid feminists of this thread.

Damn it I thought the article was about a sharing husband not sharing a husband. Who are these loony researchers who say 'polygamy was banned for misogyny and monogamy restricts women's options'. On that count, polygamy is misandogeny(or whatever the parallel). Their stupid prescription for society will leave people with no cows wife-less.

With due respect to your opinion - Pseudo-Polygamy is routinely practiced by single women as well as men in the West. It's called 'seeing' multiple people.

It is a thoroughly modern practice and nothing Stone Age about it.

The concept of a monogamous married family is fading in the West fast - younger men are not interested in squandering their life away in a loss-making venture anymore.
