Haq's Musings: PTI and JUI-F Losses in By-polls; Musharraf Indictment; Inaction Against Terrorists

Nawaz Sharif addressed the nation last week to talk about his plans to tackle economic crisis and talk with terrorists without insisting on a ceasefire. He also threatened to use force if talks don't produce results.

Sharif also made the fantastic claim that Pakistan was on its way to "become an Asian Tiger" when he was removed in 1999, ignoring well-documented data showing that Pakistan was bankrupt and heavily indebted with a stagnant economy at the end of Sharif's last stint as prime minister.

Sharif also talked about Pakistan's current debt situation as being worse than ever. This, too, is false. As percentage of GDP, the debt situation in 1999 was far worse. Pakistan's debt was 80% its GDP in 1999, worse than the current 60% of GDP, and far worse than the debt-gdp ratio of 55% when Musharraf left office in 2008.

It's important to remember the historic fact that Asian Tigers did not become Asian Tigers under "democracy". Democracy came only after Asian Tigers became Asian Tigers.

That was an after effect of sanctions which were imposed after nuclear tests. Musharraf tried to make up for it by claiming bounties. One still wonders even a policeman would be ashamed in this day and age to claim bounties yet Musharraf never felt anything of the sort.

So the question still is: Was Pakistan on its way to becoming an Asian Tiger in 1999 as Nawaz Sharif claimed in his recent TV address to the nation? Or did he lie to the people?

Answer to your question is that it was all BULL. check out stats of last four regimes at World Needs A Change under the article The Forgotten Past.

i dont know about his era since i was less than 7 years old.

but i must admit..they are at present doing there level best.alot better than the previous govt.

And i am sure we will see stronger GDP growth rate in the coming years.

Though he sucks at foriegn policy

Nawaz Sharif is doing what every other politician has done. It is a system that has no ingenuity...

All Nawaz Sharif has done is glorified his rule (no matter how inglorious it actually was) as exemplary and exclaimed that everyone other than him of course has ruled badly. Pakistan in the 1990's was a bastion of corruption and scene to a juggling match between Benazir's PPP and Nawaz Sharif's PMLN. One would stop ruling and the other would come...

Both the PMLN and PPP should have been out of Pakistani politics had Musharraf not brought forth the NRO or National Reconciliation Ordinance. That NRO allowed all the corrupt leaders to return to politics. It was actually Musharaf's biggest mistake in the history of his rule.

Dictators were always dogs of America. Ayub, Zia, and Musharraf recieved billions of dollars from the West at the cost of giving intelligence and military bases. Terrorism in Pakistan today is the result of that.

Was Pakistan on its way to become an Asian Tiger in 1999 ? Maybe not. But certainly under Nawaz Sharif, we were South Asian Tigers. Our GDP growth and Military strength was better than India.

Last time they were better then Benazir (PPP), but this time it seems that they are here to screw up. Pakistan has a power generation capacity of 20,000 and requirement is between 14-16000 MW. PPP's last govt let the circular debt rise and created energy crisis. They were busy devouring money by all means. PML(N) took the advantage by used their friendly IPPs to create further shortage in Punjab. IPPs went in to no production, thus Punjab came in serious electricity shortage. Industry migrated or closed down. First thing they could after coming in power was to pump in money just enough to give some relief to major cities of Punjab. They had no clue as to from where money is going to come. In hurried fashion they went for budget and further taxed the people who were already tax payers. Put on some additional levies on the same people. To appease corporates they decided to give relief in income tax. Taxed common man with GST which was again a relief to corporates. In nut shell economy was already in hospital, they pushed them into ICU.
PPP had taken huge loans from IMF, they further enhanced it by taking more loan for repayment to them, so no money came in Pakistan and debt increased by almost 5 billion dollars.
three months in government and less than 50% time spent in the country, spoke to people after more than two months.

First instructions given by NS after becoming PM was to change the name of Prime Minister's Secretariat to PM Office. There goes tens of millions just by one sentence. No of bomb blasts exceeds number of days of his PMship. It is an unending list and still he thinks that he will turn around Pakistan.

What?

Our economy was very weak under NS, far weaker than India's in his second term.
No Asian tiger, maybe a dying cat, but not a tiger.

My two cents. In fact Musharaf did four blunders.
1. He had a chance to cleanse all corrupt politicians, he was too kind to let them go. Had he converted that bloodless coup into bloody coup, Pakistan would have been much better. And would not have been asked another question.
2. He allowed private channels unbridled, without a code of conduct. It does not mean censorship.
3. He rightly sacked CJ in a wrong manner, thanks to his advisors.
4. The one which you have pointed out. Famous NRO.

No one can be bigger dog than Nawaz Sharif, who never bothered to demand the money of F-16, Nawaz Sharif gave away Amil Kansi (Pakistani citizen) on one phone call and Kargil for a photo session with clinton.

Nawaz Sharif wanted to eat p.ssy of Ameircan kim barker, much worse than a dog.

Musharraf actually spent to aid US. All the service rendered by Musharraf were reimbursed to Asif Ali Zardari and Yousaf Reza Gilani.

It was 9-11 which brought US into the picture until 2001 there was no US but still Pakistan was performing.

Difference was Shaukat Aziz, where as Nawaz Sharif has his relative as finance minister, who is always running around to to take more loans. Musharraf, actually paid back the loans.

What does US had to do with building industry and infrastructure of Pakistan?

India never attacked Pakistani check posts during Musharraf era!

Don't give stupid justifications for your excuses. Nawaz Sharif was herion trader in 80's

Sharif was given election ticket upon request of general gilani.. don't forget to say that Sharif is a dog of one of the dogs you mentioned above.
