what happened earlier: Assault on T. J. Joseph - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

KOCHI: In what every right-thinking Malayali is going to consider a blot on his or her conscience, the long-suffering wife of the college professor whose hand was chopped off allegedly by Muslim religious extremists in 2010, killed herself at her house in Muvattupuzha on Wednesday.:cry:

Salomi Joseph (49) was found hanging in the bathroom around 3pm by her husband T J Joseph. No suicide note was found but police don't suspect any foul play. "For some time she had complained of migraine. On Wednesday, the couple had gone to a private hospital at Kolenchery and returned home around 2.15 pm. It is suspected that she committed suicide between 2.30 and 3 pm", Muvattupuzha police said. Salomi was eye witness to her husband's attack on July 4, 2010.

The couple had barely been able to make ends meet after Joseph, a Malayalam professor at Newman College in Thodupuzha, was terminated from service by the college management after Joseph was attacked in a manner reminiscent of the barbaric Middle Ages. The case had become a test case of Kerala's commitment to secular values and freedom of expression, which the government and college and university authorities apparently failed and has, it seems, played no small part in driving Joseph's wife to suicide.

Joseph was seeking reinstatement in the college before his retirement on March 31, a move that would have entitled the family to minimal retirement benefits and would have helped them meet expenses of their daughter's wedding and repay fast accumulating debts. But a Mahatma Gandhi University tribunal looking into the matter had not shown the urgency befitting the case, while the college's attitude too was unhelpful.

It was alleged that Joseph had framed exam questions that amounted to hurting the religious sentiments of Muslims. However, in November 13, 2013, the Thodupuzha chief judicial magistrate court had absolved Joseph of charges under section 295 of the IPC (causing communal disharmony). "The college authorities knew that they were fighting a losing battle as the CJM court had discharged Joseph from the criminal charge of causing communal disharmony. It is under this very charge that the college management terminated him from service. A case under section 306 of IPC (abetment to suicide) needs to be booked against the college management", Joseph's advocate K Ramkumar said.

Family members and neighbours said Salomi was depressed ever since her husband was attacked. "Joseph was to retire on March 31 and the family was hopeful that the college authorities would reconsider Joseph's termination. With the money they would get, they were planning to get their daughter, who is working in a hospital in Delhi, married. But that didn't happen and they were upset", said a former colleague of Joseph.

The family was going through extremely hard times and was surviving on Rs 2 ration rice. Sources said that Salomi had even expressed her willingness to work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGREGS), the government scheme for the rural poor. "She had discussed it with her husband and he had agreed. She was planning to enrol for the same", sources said.

Advocate Ramkumar said, "The college management was indulging in delaying tactics. Few weeks back, they agreed that he will be reinstated a day before retirement which would help him get all retirement benefits. However, recently they retracted from their promise and the family was really upset with this".

However, Newman College's principal T M Joseph said, "We had not made any such promise. The matter was pending before the University Appellate Tribunal and we were awaiting the verdict".

it is very sad to see how catholic church indirectly destroyed a family. I agree, Kothamangalam diocese is afraid of threats from Jamaat-e-Islami Hind(PFI) terrorists and veiled threats to destroy their institution and target Christians of Kerala. but leity and people of that area(Muvattupuzha) should have supported them instead of isolating.

......... a worth self sacrifice to uphold 'secularism' in kerala.

In the last 54 years only 1 "hindu" has held the education ministry in Kerala and he too was an Atheist. I am not sure why the naive professor had any hope of getting his pension approved by the University Appellate Tribunal. The current education minister Abdu Rabb is from the Muslim League.

The university was named Mahatma Gandhi University No less. Poetic j......

Even as tragedies dog T J Joseph’s family, the extremists who chopped his hands off continue to be at their hideouts peacefully. Though the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is the premier agency in the nation to probe terrorism cases, took over the probe a couple of years ago, it failed to arrest the kingpins- M K Nazar who is the master brain in the case and Savad, who is the prime assailant.

M K Nazar, of Kunjunnikkara, Savad of Muthuvassery House, Ernakulam, Sajil of Thottathikudil Veedu, Muvattupuzha, Shafeeq of Odakkali, K A Najeeb of Uliyannur and Azeez, of Kizhakkanayil House, Odakkali are still at large.

The National Investigation Agency had filed chargesheet against six accused and stated that they were absconding.

The chargesheet stated that it was Savad who chopped off the right palm of Joseph and shouted “you have ridiculed Islam using the hand and you don’t write with this hand again.”

The NIA had issued a look-out notice against the accused and issued a proclamation warrant with the permission of the Ernakulam NIA Special Court.

According to NIA officials, it has been taking earnest efforts to arrest the accused and sought the help of the Interpol.

A detailed search was conducted outside Kerala, including Mumbai, where there was a chance t o find the accused person. Nazar and Savad have been absconding after the incident.

The NIA also suspected that the accused persons may have flown to Gulf countries with fake passports.

The right palm of Prof T J Joseph was chopped off by the accused on July 4, 2010. There are 54 accused in the case while the Special Investigating Team of the state police inquired the case.

The SIT had conducted a detailed probe into the case and filed chargesheets against 27 accused persons in January 2011 and arrested 25 persons.

After taking over the case, the National Investigation Agency arrested 11 accused and some were exempted from the case.

According to the National Investigation Agency , the leader of the attack team was Nazar and the accused conducted meeting at several places.

The decision to attack the professor was taken at a meeting held at Seemas Auditorium, Perumbavur.

All the leaders were entrusted with specific duties such as selecting suitable manpower for executing the attack, collecting the details of the professor and his family, watching their movements, preparing route sketch, procuring mobile phones and SIM cards using fake identity, purchasing vehicles and finding suitable hide-outs, the chargesheet pointed out.

What are you talking about? Those brave men were protecting the interests of their persecuted religion. These Hindus will always play the victim card.

Oh wait, the professor is a christian? :P

Sad to see in India some people can go so far to ruin the life of poor innocent family just to maintain their bloody secular credentials.

India never was, never is, and never will be a secular country.

Secularism IMO, has been reduced to an idea that religious tension be cooled enough to have a functioning society.

Religion will always be part of Indian society.

Otherwise, books, articles, songs and movies can get pulled out all the tie when a Muslim, Chrisitian or Hindu don't like what they see.

In a way, I can see the logic behind it. Look at the idiots above.

Kerala has become a communal volcano which can erupt anytime and irony is that neighboring states would also be burned along with it from the lava flowing out from there.

This is what happens when minority becomes majority. This should be a showcase for all those seculars who speak for secularism:woot:, Your rights and secularism will go for a toss when minority becomes majority, they will impose their rule as they did in other nations:rofl:.Thank god india is still 80% hindu and therefore minorities enjoy all their rights and freedom. :D

The diocese church is scared of those jamat-e-islami(PFI)well they should be, you are the ones who started aggressive conversions and made hindus minority in kerala now reap what you have sown. The keralites have themselves to blame for embracing Communist propaganda and other things.

They are not minority anymore, in kerala hindus right now are around 49% or maybe less all key positions and decision makers are held by minorities. They are called Minority on paper when compared to rest of India, but not in the case of kerala where their demography has reached 50% or more. You don't call 50% a minority.

Once they reached majority and hindus which were usually a buffer zone for other minorities are diminished.Things will happen as they happen in africa when they have converted everyone they will fight again for their god is right as it happens in africa.Get ready to see that type of clashes soon in future.

Whose community are u talking about?

Oh okay.

Yes 2-3 districts have more minorities..
These are not just stray incidents but just starters of what will happen, the main course will come soon. Like in Kashmir and Assam. I would say Kerala is somewhere in between Kashmir, while Assam could still enforce the so called secularism. In Mallapuram and a part of Tamilnadu where they are in minority .People have to take permission to enter those districts(mainly hindus) and permission to hold marriage functions and festivals , to the extent to open a business you need "The Minority Members" permission to start it or should atleast have a partner who is a minority.
